HTC Magic review: Practical magic

15 July 2009
A cool looking touchscreen carrying a new mobile OS was enough to get the attention of even the most hardened of them techies last time we checked. Fair enough, the HTC Magic isn't groundbreaking but the Cupcake-ful of changes it brings, promise a whole new experience...

The TIM-branded HTC MAGIC is not a "google experience" phone. The cupcake version on "tim htc magic" is slightly different from mytouch 3g or Vodafone's magic. It is a HTC customized version of android (camera application, double tap zoom, quickoffice, pdf viewer, teeter, smart dialing...). And(this is the coolest feature) this version is equiped with 288 mb of RAM (mytouch and vodafone magic have 192mb).

This review misses out some key issues. a) Does it multi-task? (Try finding that out on Google.) b) The lack of a 3.5mm jack (fixed with the Hero) is a massive error for a device designed to bring Android to the masses. BTW, having played with a Magic, it is a nice phone and the GUI is in some ways, better than a certain other touch screen device. But it would be nice to know if it has proper multi-tasking.

You might want to know, not all of the features on this version of the Magic will be found on all other Magics. The keyboard, the smart dialer, the Camera/Camcorder, and Teeter, are all HTC features, and so will not be found on the 'with Google' phones.

About the search button that you mentioned on Page 3, it was on the G1 as well, but it was one of the keyboard buttons. I guess they moved it to the front of the phone because they removed the keyboard.
