Nokia 3720 classic review: Handle without care

31 August 2009
The Nokia 3720 classic is putting on its boots, pulling on its anorak, slinging its rucksack over its shoulder and striding out into the unfriendliest of environments: water, dust, tough ground…you name it, this device promises to shrug it off...

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2009Phones like this seriously make me wonder why phones like t... moreWhy phones like N87 are not rugged/indestructible/all-proof? It's really simple:

N97 is a high-end phone. It costs a lot. Expensive materials and construction. Producing rugged phones is expensive. So a rugged N97 would be too costly for the manufacturer and too expensive for the end-user. Have you ever wondered why the 8800 are so exrremely basic? Because if they would put a complete feature set on a phone with expensive materials no one would afford it.

A high-end phone as resistant as the 3720 would reach the price of the premium phones like the 8800. Premium phone buyers have a lot of money and no brains. They dump a gold-made phone every year, and they care about status, not water-resistance.

Rugged budget phones make more sense. Yes, they cost more than a normal budget phone, but they are necessary for people who use them at work. You won't see a builder, a trucker or a farmer with an expensive N97. At least it's not common. And they are still somewhat affordable.

Nice torture test GSMArena! However, I wonder how this phone will behave on salty water. I mean, sea water or ocean water. Most phones cannot resist the salty waters based on different people's experiences. And according to some people's explanations(i don't know if it's true), sea water destructs or corrodes internal circuit boards and switches.
Probably, the nicest thing to do is to submerge it in the sea (while holding it of course) for about 15-20 minutes.

I guess my suggestion is more likely to happen in real life than your experiment of drowning it with a glass of beer.

I would still prefer Samsung B2100 over this Nokia, sorry but it looks cheap as all budget Nokias, nothing much. Screen, well, its not screen what makes rugged phones worthy ;)

Phones like this seriously make me wonder why phones like the N97 aren't sturdy...at all. I mean, if you can make the low-end phones near-indestrucable, why can't the high-end phones be the same?
