Windows Mobile 6.5 review: Saving steam for seven

11 October 2009
The OS is half a phone’s worth and there’s little wonder everyone is trying to make it the better half. In the case of Windows Mobile the emphasis really is on everyone. Version 6.5 is up and running but is it the upgrade everyone was waiting for...

Good points made in the article. However, much of it is irrelevant in my opinion, especially when one thinks about the fact that HTC and Samsung are the principal makers of Windows Mobile phones right now. Regardless of what Windows does now or in the future, HTC is still going to keep improving their TouchFlo and Samsung will do the same with TouchWiz. Also of note is the versatility of WinMo, which beats any other base UI. I currently own the Omnia II; I'm using SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 on top of TouchWiz and I love it. If I wanted to port TouchFlo 3D to the phone, I could do that also. The iPhone has largely been the same phone for three generations now, in terms of software AND hardware! Android and Web OS are promising, but the phones they are paired with have below-average specs compared to phones that run WinMo or Symbian. I'm hoping that Maemo will revolutionize Nokia. I also have the 5800, which is one of the best phones ever made in terms of value; however, I got tired of Symbian rather quickly.

I still don't get the honeycomb thing. It makes the screen look messy & there's always going to be a couple of half visible icons.

Its refreshing to see GSMarena adding new things to the lineup, OS reviews along with GSM notebooks news and not forgetting backgrounds on photography and general multimedia gadgets only makes it better.

Added with the pro styled articles it shows how the site is developing with the tech world like how i just wrote some professional styled comment off the back of my head, its all about the technology

all we know that Microsoft now works hard to release Windiws Mobile 7... i think windows mobile 6.5 was not important to Microsft because they save their Power to make windows mobile 7 wonderfull :-D

Does anyone know when microsoft will implement support for more colors??? They may have updated and so on, but the OS still only supports 65k colors! Whan all other OS' support 16m colors. And with the amoled screens och march, something has to be done, right? Maybe the colorsupport will come with windows mobile 7? MAYBE!!!

Forget it,i'll never use WM anymore,i was using Omnia i900 until last week,it is a good smartphone with WM 6.1 & still like Omnia, but not to WM,changed my favorite to MAC's iPhone now.
Omnia is good only because of samsung's touchwiz, they talked about high 1GHz CPU..for WHAT? iPhone used much little CPU but their UI is obviously unmatched by any smartphone, how come a new player like iPhone is much better than any longer smartphone player?
I've found the answer only after using both OS(WM & MAC)for sometimes,so i dare to say that iPhone's OS kicks out WM for real, they made a user friendly OS,and that could suit anyone's style, not like WM.
The first time i used a WM it took me at least 5 soft reset to understand its feature, yet in the end WM still did not suitable for me.

Glad to see SE fanboys have nothing to insist on it to defent that crappy X2! They used to shout about this untested difference, 6.5 vs 6.1, to defend against those who say X2 has nothing to offer vs X1 after 1.5 years!!! Now they can shut up and accept that SE is doing nothing except tricking people by rebranding the same sh!t and sell it for twice the price!

i am writimg this on a position that is probably from a different point of view. i have tried windows mobile before and thinks that it is not suited for simple users. its more for professional users aka geeks. me myself, am a loyal nokia symbian user for over five different s60 phones. at the end of the day it's only a matter if preference.

You got to be kidding me. What's that line I read that WinMo has "quality" apps? What's your definition of "quality".
I run a crappy WinMo phone, and crappy is the right word for it. I still haven't been able to get all the apps I want in order to replace the functionality of my old phone (which is about 4 years older than my WinMo device) Useability is worse than my older Symbian phone.
Oh, and now the current crop of 800MHz, 1GHz CPU's makes WinMo "acceptable"? Really, when my older phone is zippier and more responsive with something that is not even 200MHz?
My WinMo phone was one of my bigger mistakes. 6.5 isn't going to change anyones mind about it. There's a good reason everyone and their dog makes a custom "UI" to cover that crud.

It's a very boring update, if it could even be called that. It's more like MS came up with it's own WM shell like HTC and Samsung have been doing.

Windows Mobile (Windows Phone) isn't going away, but they long ago lost their chance at becoming any sort of standard. There's plenty of market share to keep them, and other fringe-OS's around...
