Nokia N97 mini review: Less is more

12 November 2009
The Nokia army of touchscreen smartphones gets larger by the hour and the Nokia N97 mini is surely one of the most interesting new recruits. The Finnish company has obviously reconsidered its priories and now focuses on optimization, rather than expansion with its flagships...

Currently in my 6th month of using the N97 mini. Bought it brand new in March, and it's been quite topsy turvy. The first few months it was pretty alright, loved the keyboard, but my phone twice turned itself off over the night [when it was at full charge], and only worked after I charged the phone and restarted it.

But over the past month, my touch screen has started to get so much worse. Sometimes I had to unlock and lock and unlock again just to get the touch screen working. Very frustrating. Even the little things like making phone calls or replying text messages is a b*tch, especially in the late afternoons and evenings.

Just updated the software to version 1.2 last Monday, and although the internal memory has improved somewhat, the touch screen faults is still there. Seriously toying with the idea of getting at HTC next. Quite frustrating when I've been a Nokia fan all this while, and my first experience with a touch screen Nokia phone is proving to be a disaster in the making.

Buck up please. I'm honestly turned off Nokia touch screen phones.

          Dear GSMArena,
Please make an article regarding a very serious flaw of the n97 mini – The wifi connectivity is very unstable and cannot be used for web browsing. Please follow this link in nokia forum itself : http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/t5/Connectivity/Nokia-N97-Mini-WiFi-keeps-dropping/m-p/735329#M32446. Nokia doesn’t seem to care at all. Thank you.

Simply, you CANNOT use wifi to freely connect your N97 mini. You can only use greedy payg 3g.

also- you CANNOT drag n drop or install 99% apps through ovi suite,
yep, youve guessed it, only with greedy payg 3g.

When one door is closed it could be a bug, when two doors are closed its been thought about.

Tried most suggestions and all settings.
please tell me Im (hopefully)wrong :C

                  Hello,

"The sunlight legibility is equal on the two Nokia N97s - they are both excellent. We are glad that it has nothing to do with the mediocre sunlight legibility of Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and 5530 XpressMusic."

Is this a Joke? Thats Disapointing... the Display is not usable in Sunlight, you cant see anything. (Also in an normal bright Day without direkt Sunlight.)

Your test make my decision to buy this Phone!

Otherwise, there are no other Problems on my N97mini...

As an equipment i love it. But i have following negative comments

Main problem is that the phone gets hanged often. You need to switch off and on at times when you are too eager to use the mobile.

With many application capabiltiy Nokia should have thought about having little more better than 434MHZ processor.

The battery life of N97 mini should have been better.

While N97 has handwriting recognition feature providing a stylus wouldn't have costed much to Nokia.

ok let s strat with guys in GSM arena: i blame you for misleading me why? well good phone hein? alright i give you that but how in cat's name didn t you mention that the battery won t last at least 17 hours (not a day)? why didn t you mention that as soon as you start using the browser or OVI store the battery dies on you in 1 hour? i trusted you guys...
let me just tell you a story: the day i bought the phone i was so damn happy i spent the whole day discovering this great phone.. but it the charging process never ended. night has come i had to go to sleep (the phone has been charing for more than 10 hours and never stopped) i unpluged the charger and set the alarm and slept like a baby expecting to wake up at 7 as usual to go to work!
i woke up at 9 to find that the phone is OFF the battery is dead...
i ill spear the details about the problems i had at work...

anyway i thought that sincs i m loyal to nokia thought why buy iPhone let s buy a nokia product and now i m stuck with this crappy phone damn it i have to recharge it every night!!!!

i assure you guys out there i m not the only one with this problem just take a look at this blog (suprisingly a nokia blog) and see the amount of ppl complaining about this

I've had the N97mini for about 5 weeks now and I absolutely love it. I've played with a friends iphone and it's screen is more touch sensitive than the nokia's but with my big clumsy hands i find the nokia's more user friendly. Apparently the iphone has many more aps but I can read and create word and excel documents (cost extra) where my friend can't and the nokia cerainly has all the aps that I need. Vlingo is a brilliant ap and works better with nokia than iphone...highly recommended
