Anonymous, 27 Nov 2009I like the OS, but this phone is just a brick. 18mm is thic... morethat is incorrect, you have to understand that the surface are for components in your laptop is many many times bigger than in this phone.
Sure I also think its a little bit to bulky for my taste, but it couldnt have been that much smaller.
If you look at thinner mobile devices you soon discover that they either have bigger surface areas (in most cases hidden under a larger display), or they dont have hardware that could be compared to this device... sure Nokia should have been able to cut off a few milimeters here and there, but not more that that... Im sad that they didnt, but it wouldnt have made a world in difference.

how about the IR, is it an IRda port, so that it in theory can be used for communication (but at this moment, not unlocked by software), or is it simply an IR-sender.
Sure, an IR sender is great, cause I only want it to be able to use the device as a remote, but, with an IRda port, you could program the remote software with the somewhat unusual remotes you might have in your home (I dont trust any database to cover all IR-remotes out there).

wrong about the connectivity, its even better than GSMarena says, cause the USB-port can be used as a masterport, meaning that you can connect a keyboard, mice, and other USB-devices.
This is at least what Nokia officials has communicated on the web.
As far as I know, that cant be done with any other mobile out there.

hohi, 26 Nov 2009soooooooooooo:
First you hail the big screen and the QWE... moreabou the phone being bulky i think they refer to it beeing lightly larger than the competition... and the competitions sure is about as bulky you could accept in a pocket device... sure its only a few mm's here and a few mm's there, but al of us out there looking for a device of this kind would have hoped to see something that instead was a few mm's smaller here, and a few mm's smaller there.
About the stylus, it seems cheap in the way that it seems to be easy to break... so its not cheap as in ugly, but cheap as in selecting the cheapest materials out there, despite the loss of quality.
You really dont want a fragile stylus as even the sturdy kinds break easily. But sure, you wont us it that much (if they dont add handwrite, which i hope they will), so the quality might not be to big of an issue... but you dont want a stylus that you are afraid of breaking the first time you use it.

hohi, 26 Nov 2009soooooooooooo: First you hail the big screen and the QWE... moreI agree with your comment about most people only using automatic or one easy to find mode. However that doesnt do the camera justice.. and in a mobile, the censors for the automatic modes are worse than in a normal pooint and shoot camera... with nokia phones, you often get a bluish tint on pidtures, cause the automatic mode seems to think the lightsource is a bulp (or att leat when selecting that mode in the wrong enviorment also result in a bluish tint, so I assume that is the mode the mobile has choosen), sure now you have the white balance selection, I only wanted to state that the automatic mode doesnt cut it.

hohi, 26 Nov 2009soooooooooooo:
First you hail the big screen and the QWE... moreyour wrong about the camera at this stage.
the 12 megapixel moduels at this moment take the best pictures, cause they are of the latest generation. For every new generation there are improvements in keeping noise down and capturing light. Sure, using the latest technology for improving a 8 megapixel module would be the best (about the pixelcount needed för A4 photo quality prints). Unfortunately the industry has choosen another way to go, but still the new 12mp modules take better pictures than the 8 mp, and the 8mp better than the 5mp modules. Sure nokia has worked a lot with the software on some of their phones, but at this stage not with the N900, to make the best of the 5mp module.
5 mp is outdated, cause it doesnt use the latest generation of technology, thus falls behind 8 mp and 12 mp.
And with the N900, they havent even made the best of the situation.
And 5 mp is outdated, since it does not offer the resolution to make a4 prints in real photoquality (sure you can make a4 prints, and your printer might call them photo quality, but compared to the "resolution" of analogue film, it is not on a photo quality level, that requieres at least 8mp.
And 5 mp is outdated cause of the lack of optical zooming. In the mobile world, the resolution is also used for capturing details, to compensate for the lack of zoom. 5mp does not cover that area.

I like the OS, but this phone is just a brick. 18mm is thicker than the 13.3" laptop I'm typing on now! And it's got a keyboard, a screen, a dvd burner, USB ports, network ports, webcam, bluetooth, wifi, etc, etc...
There's no excuse making a phone this thick. It's just sloppy manufacturing.

Yeah great device, but not for Australia. Nokia have confirmed several times that Australia will NOT be getting the N900 so one must launch a smuggling operation to get one. With all the hassle and cost that involves one may as well give up and just get an iPhone. There are NO good Nokia's on the market in Australia and won't be for a LONG time, if ever. Nokia have lost the Australian market - RIP Nokia.

too big and heavy...we just have to wait for Nokias next offering. At least it has to be in the same dimension as the N97 mini.

It's important to keep in mind that outside of hardware functionality (camera, video, weight) all other features that were noted as negatives can be and most likely will be fixed in time. Half of the complaints in this review are already being worked on in the form of firmware updates and apps. (An FM radio app has already been added, for example.) For that reason, it's important to note that the views about the handset, and maemo 5+ devices in general, can only be assessed from moment to moment. The maemo community is great and a definite strength for the platform. It doesn't excuse the omission of some very basic features in the handset upon release, but the fact that they can be fixed should be noted.

ik, 26 Nov 2009Maemo looks good.
Won't be as customizable as Symbian or W... moreIt supposed to be more customizable than S60 and Winmo.
And it is... you can pretty much re-skin the whole thing.

nice.
Tough i had expression that the n900 would be better.
But it has what i need. Nameing a few Decent no exelent web browser, good camera (better than this 5800 crap). Im still wondering why the h.... I got this.
The software on n900 is little em...in childrens shoes (directly translated from finnis), but expected to be boosted.
But mainly i finaly get rid of symbian os. That in my use hasnt been stable. If maemo wont deliver, its winmo that has the next try.

you crazy? the picture quality of N900 is very the same of that Nokia 6720 and you claimed it's one of the best 5MP camera shooter and now you're saying N900 has a poor picture quality? it makes no sense at all! HTC HD2 has worst picture quality!
