Sony Ericsson Vivaz review: Viv A-to-Z

09 February 2010
Sony Ericsson is an alliance of two tech giants and with phones like the Vivaz it shows. It’s a gadget all the way, one that will galvanize geeks and charm the regular user. Eight megapixel still images and 720p video with continuous...

i'm able to send text messages, but I cannot receive them. When i try my sim on another phone, it works, but on the vivaz, its not receiving the text messages. I've confirmed it's not a problem with the service provider. Please let me know if anyone else is having this problem. Other than this problem, its a great phone.

Nice review... But where's the "What's In The Box" section?
Inquiring mind wants to know what's included normally....

Hi, GSM Arena team. I love your reviews - detailed and critical. However in this one I can't see the "what's in the box" part. Do you plan to add it?

I noticed the volumn is very low when having an incoming call. The caller's voice is hardly heard. Is there a problem with my Vivaz or anyone else having the same problem with Vivaz?

How much free RAM does this thing have after boot? I have the Nokia E72 and am quite disappointed with that aspect, it has 128 MB but boots with only around 40 MB free which is too little.
                Is this OS as heavy?

Also, does HelloOx work to unprotect this model?

The vivaz's accelerometer doesn't really 'have its own mind' but yea,it sometimes works weird. When I try to unlock the phone (placed on the table or any flat surfaces) by pressing the unlock key, the picture comes the wrong way - it first shows in the vertical view but the next second it automatically shifts to the horizontal view. Have to hold the phone upright to prevent this from happening.

I'm in doubt between this one and the Vivaz pro. I would like to know if the fullscreen qwerty is easy accessible when, for example composing an email or an sms? I read in a review that you need to push a few buttons before you can use the qwerty?

I would also like to know if the facebook app works properly? Thanks!

Dazzy, 12 Mar 2010A few questions for those of you that have played with this... more1. Its not as slow as some people make it out to be. Its been fine for me and very responsive

2.You can adjust the touch vibration for different phone profiles. (Touch Vibration Intensity) or something like that.

3.Its not much of a problem. its a bit annoying when you want to unlock the phone because you press it once and for some reason it comes on the wrong way round and you have to press it again. There mite be a way to turn it off as I seem to remember being able to turn it off on the C902 but nevertheless, its not really a problem.

                            Quality phone!!!

Peter, 15 Mar 2010Q: Is the onscreen keyboard as slow as mentioned in other r... moreThank you for your reply Peter

I ordered it this morning and cant wait to get it tomorrow.

Yes I knew about the browser, but thanks for confirming it, found Opera Mini to be fairly quick on Viewty but then that phone is pushing 3 years old now.

Lets hope they sort the small niggles out soon.

                              Thanks Again

Q: Is the onscreen keyboard as slow as mentioned in other reviews?
A: It is more responsive than the LG Viewty, and i don't find it hard to write on it. It is pretty impressive for a resisitve screen!

Q: Does the phone vibrate to signify a successful press of the screen?
A: Yes, and you can adjust how much it shall vibrate.

Q: Some reviews indicate the accelerometer has a mind of it's own what have you found to be the case?
A: I have found it to sometimes be a little weird and rotates the screen on occasions where i didn't want it to... I guess it can be fixed in a software update.. My oppinion is that it isn't that much of a downside, because it is a few times it rotates on it's own.

What i find most bad on the phone is the software, for exsampel the camera lights doesn't turn on by it self and you have to do several touch's into a menu so you can adjust it. The browser also isn't that god, downloading opera helps a bit, but both of them are pretty slow and not as good as the iPhone..

A few questions for those of you that have played with this phone.

Does the phone vibrate to signify a successful press of the screen?

I am still using my old original LG Viewty (mainly because smart phones to date haven't really been pocket-able) and the resistive screen has never bothered me and I actually find it more reassuring to use than the screen on my ipod touch.

Some reviews indicate the accelerometer has a mind of it's own what have you found to be the case?

I got down to CarphoneWarehouse last week and loved the feel of the mock-up phone, just they didn't have a live model to play with.

I am about ready to order this, so I'd appreciate any comments on the above.

Many thanks and I look forward to your replies.

dt, 08 Mar 2010the samsung hd is so expensive and it is a year old. vivaz ... morebetween those two, go for the vivaz.

the x6 is running the same OS but the vivaz, when released, will be the fasted symbian powered phone. the x6 speed isnt anywhere near that of the vivaz, plus you get a better camera/video recorder, and it comes with 8gig sd card.

correct me if im wrong but the x6 comes with 16g and 32g, and its internal...for a such a low cpu on the x6, running that storage will be rather difficult.

everything else is now (thankfully) standard on the vivaz such as 3.5audio jack, micro usb port (the usb port on the x6 does not get used for charging sadly, nokia had put in its proprietary jack for that)

the other thing is that the vivaz has resistive touchscreen vs the x6's capacitive. it all comes down to preference there. resistive is at a point where, you really dont notice much of a difference, however some just prefer the smoother feel of capacitive. for me i prefer resistive just because i am not limited in my use.

if youre not planning on getting a new phone for a couple months though, i would wait till summer if i were you. symbian^3 should be making some kind of appearance....hopefully for the better, and SE might end up releasing something new as well.

hope this helped, and best of luck.
