Motorola BACKFLIP review: Back and forth

18 March 2010
Android elders must be staring at this one in disbelief. Looking down at it for all we know, measuring it up. What about the BACKFLIP? We guess it’s exactly the kind of gadget to stare back, humble but defiant. Android was a life...

I am very happy for motorola! I've been a moto user for a long time but had to switch to samsung since moto pulled out of SE Asia. But once they come back, my wallet and I will be waiting with open arms. BTW I am very interested with the DEXT.

Well, Motorola hasn't updated its ROKR line yet so it comes as no surprise. I even have a simple QA1 Karma here for my phone needs and a Cowon S9 as my main music player. No complaints here.

And as to Senn having junk phones, maybe it's just your preference to a sound signature. Sennheiser is famous for its dark and laid-back sound signature, as opposed to Denon's more midrange-centric, spacious soundstage. Grado is more of aggressive, rock kind of headphone.

Either that or you haven't heard the HD650 or HD800 yet. Or... get a STAX electrostatic system. :P

I am a DJ on my spare time so i need good equipment, i have Shure se530 earbuds for travelling and Denon D7000 for my sets. Personally i think Sennheiser is overrated junk.

I don't need the best sounding musicplayer when iäm travelling, but i am audiophile enough not to use the latest offerings from Motorola. Don't wanna use iPhone, had it for like 5 days before i gave to my little 12 rear old cousin, it's a total piece of crap in every way.

I was looking forward to some nice Moto releases cause they make nice phones and nice audio, actually Moto used to be the best in the audio department, god knows what happened.

I text and mail alot, so i neeeded the qwerty keyboard and stuff. So now i'm lening toward the Nokia N900, SE Xperia or something else, don't know yet.

David, 19 Mar 2010Seriously what's wrong with Motorola!? Makes me mad as hell... moreAre you using fail stock earbuds? Use superior headphones instead. I'm using Sennheiser HD25-1 cans, same ones you see on professional recording and newscasting equipment. And that's middle-end. Dare I say a Grado SR325, Shure SE530, Sennheiser HD600 or AKG K701?

And of course, are these Android phones being marketed as music phones:? I don't see such claims in any advertisement. Sure the sound quality may be so-so, but at least the file management system is simple yet solid. If you want music phones better stick with your pretty iPhone.

Better yet, get a separate audio player. Phones were never meant to match pure music players in terms of sound quality anyways.

how impractical is that keyboard going to be when the phone is folded up- and i didn't see a lanyard hole- the only practical way i can see users being able to carry the phone

[deleted post]From the review and pictures provided, you will notice that the box is not orange. It's the original Motorola box.

Furthermore, there is no mention of any AT&T bloatware in the review and there are certain comments on Google in the review. I did not see any comments on Yahoo.

Phoner, 19 Mar 2010The review is on a non-AT&T Backflip? Is that correct? ... moreIt's exclusive to AT&T. The only carrier branding on the phone is on the hinge. It doesn't bear their logo anywhere else on the body of the phone.

Can GSMARENA confirm that? Thanks :)

David, 19 Mar 2010Seriously what's wrong with Motorola!? Makes me mad as hell... moreAre you talking about music playback using the speakerphone? If you're really waiting for an excellent performer in that area then it could be a long wait. There's a reason it has a 3.5mm headphone jack....it's to plug in headphones. The Android music player is boring but functional. I have no problems sitting and watching movies on the Backflip even without headphones. I will say that there may be an AT&T Nexus One in my future, but the Backflip is a really solid performing phone.

would rather use a g1 or mytouch 3g than this
for a keyboard wait for the nexus one pro or go with the droid or g1 if you really need it
g1 has been a great phone and the mytouch even better

Seriously what's wrong with Motorola!? Makes me mad as hell! I was wanting to try something new from my Blackberry 9700 and decided on a Moto phone.

I needed a phone with good quality on the music cause i travel alot.

First i tested the Moto Milestone which had ridiculous bad audio quality, so i decided to wait for the Backflip, and it has even worse audio, what the hell!

Moto used to make some seriously great audio quality on their phones, how can you progress backwards from something you have already perfected? Makes no sense.. Very disapointed!

Now i have to look for something else cause Moto let me down big time, no wonder no one cares for your crappy as phones anymore Moto, just shut down the business.

Anyone have any suggestions? Except iPhone that is, been there done that and it sucks in every way.

Pretty accurate review. I love mine and I'm looking forward to Android upgrades. I did notice that a "con" on your list was lack of voice dial. It has it. There's a button button on the bottom right on the dialer and you can set up a double tap of the home button to activate voice dial.
