but for someone a least bit tech savvy the galaxy S is the utter choice.
No one can argue that for mr.anybody, barely knows how to use a computer, the iOs is easiest way. But keep in mind that easy things don't ever teach you anything.
If you don't care about tech knowledge well, that's fine, it's your choice.

I don´t know the prices in the U.K or USA but at least in my country you are comparing a €649.00 phone with a €399.00 phone! 62% more for the IP4!!! Galaxy S - whatever faults you can throw at it - is huge value for money!

Anonymous, 14 Sep 2010Suddenly and overnight the iphone 3GS passes from Godly fas... moreActually you should learn to read & understand the concept of a statement.
I never said the 3GS was a plastic phone made by a 5 yo - I sad the Galaxy S was - seriously - I held it & the only other phone at this level that was as cheaply build is the SE vivaz. & the Android apps look like they've been developed by a 5 yo too. That's from my time with a HTC legend.
you only have to look at the number of complaints on various apps in the marketplace by actual users who've commented on apps that have an equivalent in both app stores "not as good as this app for the iphone" "doesn't do as much as iphone app" "costs 5 times as much as iphone app"
It was my wife's iphone 3GS that saw me realising that apple have this aspect of smartphones so much better than the rest. I went to get the galaxy s or the iphone 4 thinking that the galaxy s would be better than my legend but in terms of the android OS it's not. Android at the mo is just too immature as an OS & it's way, way too fragmented (it's pot luck whether or not an app will work on your phone or not..)
Maybe in a couple of years when my current contract comes up for renewal I'll have a look at what android can offer then with a few years behind it & then go for it but at the moment it's nowhere near apple I'm afraid.

Sure, the SGS is somehow plasticky and the Iphone 4 has got a superior outer shell. But as an electronic engineer and a performance freak in general, I'd prefer anyday driving in a skoda with a ferrari engine than a ferrari with a skoda engine!!!
It's not about having enough money to buy an Iphone 4. Even a beggar can own one on rental. It's not a status symbol like a shade which some punks like to wear over their head at midnight so that you have a glance to see if it's rayban or police. As with any electronic device, it's all about overall performance... and the SGS is a clear winner.

I've had an iPhone 2G for almost 3 years. I get into contracts so any phone is affordable and I keep the plan I wanted so I could care less about resell value and I'm open to change. I love my J/B iPhone but i still hate iTunes and hated how jbs took ppl for dumba$$es telling'em their iP4 looses signal cuz they don't hold it properly!
Anyway, I could live with that crap as long as the iP4 is what I want and need and that's why I'm reading more than only one review.
A 6GB data plan @ $30can makes me wonder about having a netbook, a media player and a phone in a single device. I remember i found the Iphone big at first but got used to it because of its features. I must see and hold the sgs before i buy it. The idea of having a smartphone with an OS that lets you do about anything you want is a plus for the sammy but I'd freak out if i had more than 1-2 crashes/freezes per week. Besides the phone functionality, i want mail (contact & content syncing), internet browsing (videos, social networks) music and pretty much everything I can customize in the gadget as long as OS is stable. Tethering and flash support are also nice features. Anyway i'll end up with one of these in the next few days and it surely will be the right choice for me.

ArcFenrir, 12 Sep 2010I have been reading GSMArena for past 1 year, and I enjoyed... moreI couldn't agree more with your post.
a few other things I noticed. Whenever the reviewer had the iphone 4 on top it was by 1 point. Whenever the galaxy was on top it was by 2, 3 or even 4 & I've played with both phones in the shop & nowhere was either phone 3 or 4 points better than the other.
The guy in the shop had a display model of each phone & on wifi we went through a few things - just loading a web page - the iphone was way quicker. downloading an app - a bit slower on the iphone but he downloaded a free app on each & the iphone one was superb - the galaxy S one was very amateurish & looked like it had been created by a five year old (at that point I chose the iphone 4 - as despite the constant talk on price of the handsets - on a contract in a shop they're not that far apart in prices) & I thought why spend all that money on a plastic piece of crap that looks cheap & when you show off an app to a friend all they'd say is "is that it??? - is that all it can do?"
& the beauty of an iphone is all the extra accessories you can buy. If you want you can buy a zoomIT card reader & stream movies, music etc from an SD card or use it to transfer media to the iphone so you're not locked to itunes if you don't wish to be. With a galaxy S you're left with (in my opinion) an inferior screen & a cheap plastic phone that looks just like every other samsung cheap plastic phone & its power is severely curbed by the inherent weakness of the android fragmented OS with lightweight apps.
& finally it's worth mentioning that every app in the appstore that has an equivalent in the marketplace is a lot lot cheaper. eg. Hungry shark = £2.49. Hungry shark in appstore = 59p. when you start to add lots of apps (which you can't on android yet as 2.2 aint on the galaxy S so you've only got a limited ammount of storage for apps... then you'll be spending a whole lot more money on android than on iphone in the long run (also bearing in mind that they both come on 2 year contracts in the UK which is a long time to build up a big catalogue of apps..

The reviewer should be fired. This review is as biased as it gets, ffs it was like reading a press release from Samsung itself. I thought this was a professional site, after this I doubt I'll be coming back...

I have been reading GSMArena for past 1 year, and I enjoyed immensely their very detailed and thorough analysis of their posts. Also they do a lot of research prior to their review writing, and kudos to the GSMArena team!
However, this direct, very aggressive post just changed everything in me about GSMarena website and the members who wrote this article.
A cleverly disguised "neutral" professionalism, with a sharp blunt knife at their sleeves.
Maybe it is just my view, but I have to admit I was hugely shocked at how this article is neutrally biased - to those unfamiliar to this term, it means it takes the face of neutral tone, but it convincingly expresses their bias towards certain side.
I can see that in every single section of this article, pretty much Galaxy S has the upper hand. But is it really true so?
It is just way too unconvincing to me that a reputable product as iPhone, is just totally underhanded to a samsung product with such a great margin. I mean, it is just a total win for Galaxy S in every section imaginable with a big twist in their writing style.
Where are other sections as battery life? constant Android unstability in their upgrades? the major conflict between the Android versions?
Other thoughts for everyone : is really glass and steel material a matter of "who wins" ? ask your conscience. Last time I checked, and vastly accepted in the world of fashion, is that a personal preference for the materials, are PERSONAL preferences, not something that decides who wins or loses - if that was the case, fashion shows would be inexistent on Earth, and we would not have "freedom" of preferences.
Some people prefer plastic.
Some don't.
GSMArena, just because something is made of glass and steel, and is easy to shatter, does not mean is a loss.
Where's the common sense? Isnt this way to biased towards making something beautiful into a "loser item" ? I am sure you guys have held the iPhone4 in your hands. HOw did it feel? No, really, how did it feel? And here I thought, I never saw something of such a beauty.
Somehow, it seems like no matter what iPhone 4 is made of or is capable of, it can never win in your individual analysis of performance criteria - no matter how high the resolution, no matter how many millions of people love the iPod feature, no matter how much User Experience matters, no matter how rich is the AppStore, none of this matters to your reviews.
In an unbiased fair comparison, EVERY detail should be counted - not just details that one single product excels at. Read carefully and you'll see that every single section, is somewhat of what we already knew Galaxy S would surpass the iPhone4. But so many other criterias are missing - the criterias that favors the iPhone 4 -.
Sounds like a rant? Surely, but how else can I put in written form, when a professional mobile review website has already convinced you with such a skillful writing talent that Galaxy S is better, no matter what?
I honestly have never imagined such a landslided review would ever come out in GSMArena. It is a huge disappointment - and also irritating - . Professinal? surely their writing it is, but the facts? Oh, I'm not so sure about that now.
Read again.
Read the post again, and look thoroughly of the way GSMArena team constructed this post.
A very technically convincing piece of reading, specially formulated for readers, while excluding criterias that iPhone excels at.
As a reader, as a technology lover, and as a gadget lover, as a fairness lover,
GSMArena, this is not it. I don't think this is the right thing for you guys to be writing.

sgs is already selling for $300...
cannot compare the two. As always samsung makes a phone with everything but the kitchen sink-the kitchen sink being support from them. they will forget about this phone in 2 months cause 10 others will be released. With the iphone you will always have support for atleast the next 3 years.
See samsung omnia + omnia 2, galaxy 1, instinct, pixon for more details...

Only the wp7 Samsung Cetus or ios 4.3 + google sdks (that apple decided to review for unlock recently) can possibly be at par with the 2.2 SGS currently.
I also found on ebay some replacement battery cover for the sgs, which are made out of cowhide leather :) it costs about 60$ but if you get it well, the galaxy becomes higher quality and high grade material than the iphone 4.
