Windows Phone 7 OS review: From scratch

08 October 2010
A modern smartphone OS needs to be balanced with excellent cloud services and draw on the cutting edge of software. The Windows Phone 7 OS is nothing like Win Mobile. The new UI is trendy, with a magazine look, and is incredibly...

seriously what does this os have that symbian^3/android/ios4.2 doesn't have ?? Microsoft have failed by trying to exert too much control like apple while forgetting that most of their users prefered their os due to the freedom they had. At times The ui looks really ugly it reminds me of the bb os where what you get is plain text with dull a background, though microsoft have decided to keep things simple somehow this os feels dis-organised i'd rather settle for htc desire hd,iphone 4 or n8 than use a device with this os since most devices will be power hungry with huge specs sheet in terms of processor(meaning draining battery faster) and whats the use of all that hardware if i can't play a youtube video due to lack of flash support or fail to play a divx file. I'm sorry but gsmarena you've got this review wrong windows phone 7 is worth praising at all

This is some kind of MS revenge to the market. They just decided to punish us all because we all allowed apple to sell "smart" phones without basic functions like copy&paste or file managers. Now they will produce more expensive phone with more useless animations but without options they had for years. And I have to say: we deserve every bit of that punishment...

-high minimum requirement is GOOD. I feel thats the one thing thats holding android-market back... because developers are constantly limited and held back to make sure their apps work for low-end devices, that they cannot publish an app that could use the better hardware.

-LOVE the interface. I suppose all those years of Zune paid off.

OMG , who would want this piece of shit on its high specs mobile phone????
So many limitations and none advantages over Android and other OS.

Microsoft I think your shares will go down at least 10% when people see what "new and exciting stuff" you brought to their lives!!!

The review seems to indicate that WP7 is a bare bones first iteration of a new OS. My feeling that in the future, WP7 (or whatever version) will have a lot more features that we are used to having like multitasking and copy/paste. All of the apps like the browser also seems to be bare bones as well.

The concept of hubs seem interesting. I'm not sure how this works in practice. Can developers add on features of existing hubs or even create new ones? The idea sounds good in theory. The data objects like contacts are there and available for apps to display and integrate to. However, it is unclear what happens if some developer has some new data objects. Can he add them or allow other apps to integrate with this data like hubs?

I would have liked to know more about the widgets or "tiles" as WP7 calls them. Can they be resized and moved around? I like having widgets display some relavent information. The widgets on my phone can display some info on a few lines. I would have liked for my widgets to be resizable so that they can display more if needed.

The review seems to indicate that the apps screen list everything. There is no mention of whether you can organise all of those apps into different folders. The review says that the list for the apps can become unwieldy if you start adding a bunch. I like organising mine into folders so that a particular app is easy to find.

Finally, the look of the UI seems a bit weird to me and seems to waste some space. I don't mind the UI looking ugly as long as it is functional. The home screen (start) seems to waste a bunch of space on the right side. The 2x4 tiles layout isn't bad, but why waste the entire length of the screen just so you can show a tiny arrow at the top? This also makes the home screen tiles look off centred. I don't mind it being off centred, but I cannot stand the waste of space down the right side below the little arrow. I would have preferred to be able to expand the tiles to use this empty space. If there is any text in those tiles, at least use the space so I can see more text.

This is a brand new OS and appears to be drastically different that the more popular OS's out today. I'm going to give WP7 the benefit of the doubt for now. WP7 did not give me a good first impression, but I get a sense that there may be some promise.

This review is just too pro-windows 7.
It's really too biased in favour of this crap OS. I mean come on wit those disadvantages even a symbian phone is miles ahead of this and yet gsmarena is saying that this OS is great.
                    Yeah, right.

I think that not all the things mentioned in the review are true. On the other hand, microsoft will pull up with updates to make WP7 better and smarter.........

Goodbye ios, symbian, android or whateveaaaaaaa...........WP7 RULEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

hey gsm arena your conclusion is larger than the whole review! Anyway that huge font and massive icons make wp7 ugly. Suitable for blind people. Has nice menu transitions and animations though but again so many lacks. Just can't go for it.

All those "tiles" flashing about with large and tiny fonts have been copied from the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". Watch the movie again; pay attention to all those computer monitors inside the space station and you will see what I mean! But I no longer have any faith in Microsoft, they are always playing catch-up with others and they always deliver far less than what they are capable of. Pity.

,,Some market analysts even predict that it will push Microsoft’s mobile OS market share to iOS levels by 2014 (with 2010 all but gone, that’s just 3-4 years in the future)." Who was so stupid to do that? This is disaster not a system for todays manager (not for kids of course).
