Samsung I8700 Omnia 7 review: A whole new galaxy

11 October 2010
Though it might seem like a chicken-and-egg situation, the question in our case never was which one came first: Windows Phone 7 or the Samsung Omnia 7. We know you’re all adding two and two together. Our Windows Phone 7...

Man was so pumped up to get WP7 but after leaning it doesn't have outlook sync, only exchange, I gave the hotmaail exchange sync a try for contacts and calendar. First day looks good. Sync works. Second day some contact problems, deleted offending contact. Third day, calendar problem. No fix. If repetition entries, the exchange sync WILL create duplicates. It doesn't if using Outlook. I ended up having 100s of the same appointment spamming my calendar. Same Birthday multiple entires. Now the contacts syncing is having problems. Man and don't get me started with the inability to merge messenger contacts with outlook contacts. Seriously? If there's one update Microsoft should look at, its rolling out Outlook sync.

Jteve Sobs, 14 Oct 2010If I'm not wrong, WP7 only bears the Zune name and has Zune... moreThere is no such thing as 'zune format', the zune software will read and play all mainstream codecs (but not ogg and flac). All you need to do is tell it where your music and videos are.

Now go sit in a corner and think about how to be less of a failure.

Yes you can sync this with your mac via Zune.

Tried this phone today and It Is such a top end phone. Loved playing the crackdown 2 game using my house as the base on bing maps.

I am sold on Windows Phone 7, it's so much better than I thought It would be. The only decision now Is whether to get the Omnia now or wait for the Dell in December...

My only question is can you sync a WP7 with a Mac? I'm guessing it's exclusive to a Windows PC but I'd buy a WP7 if it would work on my Mac... though I guess you can always use Bootcamp, right?

Do you prefer 200,000 crap or 2000 good ones. can you try all 200K apps. I need some good apps and I am sure with WP7 having the best development environment for programmers (i am one) applications will be developed fast, but quality applications first.

Does this come with KIES, too - or the Zune software?

KIES is a killer, an absolute no-go for me. Plus, the upgrade policy and quality of Samsung service are not among the good ones in my area.

Will stick to HTC for sure, as they offer at least the same quality with some more customer/user oriented software - as seen on their webpage.

Jteve Sobs, 13 Oct 2010Such a shame. Huge potential but now it seems like its goin... moreI thought trolls got removed? This guy is a real piece of work. He's hardly alone though, it seems very few people remember that Windoze Mobile was around a long time before iOS or Android. If those systems can rise from zero so successfully and quickly, then its not hard to believe that WP7 could go much further, much faster. Given that until a couple of quarters ago it had a more marketshare than either iOS or Android, a good update should see Microsoft clawing back fairly swiftly. If you look at the success they've had with Bing, going up against the virtual monopoly of Google from nothing, it also shows that Microsoft's new approach can work. To me WP7 seems to offer a little bit of the best of both Android and iOS. e.g. I'd never buy an iPhone because up until the latest one I thought it was ugly and whilst the current one is probably the best looking phone you can buy, it is clearly a poorly engineered piece of garbage, beset by multiple problems. With WP7, like Android, I can avoid those problems by choosing a handset that suits me. Choice is a wonderful thing, a fact that somehow eludes Apple.

Jteve Sobs, 14 Oct 2010If I'm not wrong, WP7 only bears the Zune name and has Zune... moreI won't need to, all my music is already on my Zune. If it's a hassle to migrate stuff from your iPhone/iTunes, then it must be because that is a really restrictive environment. I have no trouble copying my stuff from Zune, anywhere I want it to go. With a WinPhone7 phone, I'll actually need less software than I do now, so it actually has the capacity to make life simpler for any and all PC users [I've never had a phone with decent PC software].

•No Bluetooth file transfers- True, but january update will enable this
•No Flash or Silverlight support in the browser-True, but theres an app for silverlight and flash that will launch for video for those formats.
•Too dependent on Zune software for file management and syncing-true, same as the iphone with itunes... dont really see the probleme.
•No video calls-carrier and oem option.
•Music player lacks equalizer presets-true, but there arent mutch better stock players. Third party app from marketplace enables this.
•No multitasking- true, but coming. in January will have app switcher
•No copy/paste-true, but january update will enable this.
•No sign of free Bing maps Navigation so far-true, but january update will bring this feature.
•No memory card slot-windows phones support this, but when removed you will need to reset to factory settings. so its importate that you chose the size of the card that you whant to use first, then insert it and reset your phone. wp7 uses RAID 0 type of memory, it combines the phone storage with the sd card in one visible storage. (anti-piracy tecnique).

Lance, 14 Oct 2010But it has Zune built into it, I'm not sure i get your point. If I'm not wrong, WP7 only bears the Zune name and has Zune syncronisation (such as Zune Marketplace) built into it. Even so, how can you classify every WP7 as a Zune itself?

Microsoft forgot the one little fact that iPods, iPhones and iTunes still dominate how people see, view and sync their music.

Honestly, would you migrate your 10,000+ songs, 500+ videos and whatnots over to the Zune format when you buy a WP7? Hell no!

In regards to stereo crosstalk. The Samsung's supposedly have some DSP that messes with the audio. Might be worth it to look for that stuff and maybe disable it, if that's the case.
