Dell Streak review: Size does matter

05 November 2010
The Dell Streak has crossed the line where phones stop – and by some distance too – but we are still not completely convinced it’s beyond the point where tablets start. Is the Dell Streak sitting on a fence or sitting right in the middle of nowhere...

As a Streak owner I would highly recommend this phone. The current 1.6 build isn't stock 1.6. It supports pinch zoom (and works well)and offers exchange support. While there are several Froyo builds out there, I'm waiting for Dell's official 2.2 release which should be out early December. Having flash support for browser and the added speed of Froyo this is going to be a winning combo for Dell.
The display is crisp and even YouTube video look fantastic (choose to watch in HQ or on wifi) I don't use the camera much, but it's fine for a quick shot or two.
This device does what it's supposed to do very well. It's not supposed to be small, or a stand alone camera but it's supposed to be a small tablet w/ phone capabilities. In that respect it does an excellent job in my book.
btw, many of the cons listed here are fixed with Froyo and the reviewer should have pointed this out more as it's just around the corner.

If this is used with the logitech DiNovo Mini bluetooth keyboard, it becomes a mini netbook.

                  Check out this link:

I'm really tempted to get one now!

So the reviewer decided to post this FIVE MONTHS after the phone was launch, and jumps into an endless tirade of slagging on the phone? Wow, that's fair.

                    1. The screen may not rival iPhon4 but it certainly beats a lot other competitors. I have no issues viewing it under glaring sunlight either.

                    2. There IS usb host and on-the-go, even on 1.6 Get your facts right before you post your review, if not, don't ever bother.

                    3. This is the only phone WITH 2gb built-in storage just for you to install apps, other phones come with only 512mb-768mb.

                    4. What's the point of continously bitching about no DIVX/XVID, flash support? That's the whole reason people use Android OS, you can add those on via apps! Sheeeessshhh...

I can point out a lot more flaws in your review, but that would just be a waste of my time. I strongly urge anyone who wants to buy this phone to check out other reviews as well and not rely on what you've read here.

I got a chance to play with this phone a few weeks ago. Simply put -- its a disaster. It lags when switching from one desktop to another. It is shipping with 1.6 donut which is about 1 yr old now. The biggest turnoff though is the size -- its way too big for a phone and way too small for a tablet. It is like the authors said -- in no mans land. Dell needs to keep to pc and stay out of the phone business.

So, in the end, it's kind of an old device released 1 year too late.

The streak is a niche device and is perfect for business use with a bit of techie knowlegde to update to steve j froyo with flash.

However, the review was design for the mainstream consumer which would know how to flash to froyo and hence the review is justify

My only improvement would be to lose the bezel making the device bigger than it should or increase the screen to 6" without increasing the current size. The htc hd2 is a great example of having the screen the same size as the device

I used to have a respect on gsmarena's review, but after reading this review, I feel I was so stupid to even read this. Some points that are showing no experience and knowledge about Streak:
1.Disappointing screen quality ? Go read The real users of this phone and they'll tell you how crisp and bright the display is!

2.No Eclair/Froyo update yet (most units are still stuck on 1.6 Donut)? The BETA FROYO is leaking in the web now

                                        3. Stereo speaker? There is no Stereo Speaker on the Phone!

Please learn and experience the phone first, before making a review. Or you can simply change the title into: "First Look" of Dell Streak instead.
