Samsung S8530 Wave II review: Riding the wave

19 November 2010
They shall come in wave upon wave. Or so it seemed in the beginning. Samsung certainly wanted a strong start for their own Bada OS and they had it. It is usual for sequels to be questioned and belittled. That’s one thing the Wave II doesn’t have to worry about. Update: Samsung Dive overview added...

Streaming videos like youtube and internet images are very poor. Poor antialiasing.
Hope this is updated in Bada 2.
Applications are very less and those few which are available too is chargable in Samsngapp store.

As fasr as "unprotected lens" goes, i think they are using the same scratch resistant glass as on the front screen. Haven't tried scratching it but it just feels like that.

Wave's are really good phones hardware wise, but Samsung has the worst:
                - support (doesn't really exist)
                - bugs reporting (it's impossible to do)
                - firmware/BadaOS changelogs (there aren't any)
                - and slowest software developement and support cycle

I have the original GT-S8500 and just like all the other users of this device, we are blindly waiting for a BadaOS 1.2 to happen and then just find out nothing got fixed because you can't report bugs, you can't establish a contact with anyone from Samsung and since there aren't any changelogs you have no freakin idea what they improved or fixed. I also get the feeling that since the Wave II announcement, original Wave was left to rott. When Wave III will arrive, i'm prety sure the same will happen with Wave II. Samsung seems to be a neverending monster that's churning out new phones and doesn't give a damn about existing customers. I'm sure anyone who pays 400+ EUR for a phone feels the same. I'd understand such level of support for something that costs 50 EUR, but certainly not for something that is this expensive. Makes me wonder how those Samsung users with 700+ EUR worth phones feel...

Thanks for the great in-depth review, best one on this phone I found so far!
                          A few more questions though:
                          - Does the built-in browser have Flash 10 or older version? Are there alternative browsers available for bada OS?
                          - Have you tried syncing the device with Google (calendar, contatcs, tasks?). Does it work? Can you give more details about the PIM applications (especially calendar) and how they work?
                          - How about updates for bada? Will future versions of bada run on the latest devices like wave 2?
                          Thanks, Ben

                            Hi GSM-Arena,

I read in a comment that the BADA OS (even in V1.2) is only capable of handling 1300 messages max. Is that true? I cant believe because my old Touch HD with that old WM6.1 currently handles 8300 messages (SMS) without any problem. Why should a manufacturer like Samsung bundle such a nice hardware with such a loosing software?

                            Thanks for clearing that up!

                                Hi,

has anyone experience (with a test model or else) about syncing PIM data (mainly contacts and calender) to Win / compi or a Debian client? Or has a product sheet stating that that works??

Or the one with the extra super amoled screen. Or maybe the next one with the extra super duper lcd screen. Or maybe the next one with the super above super among super duper amoled screen. Or maybe that other one that I've heard that will be called the greatest super great extra super ever highest level ever super amoled screen, hahahahaha.

because the density of the pixel is to large, its using 3 subpixel per pixel, unlike Pentile RGBG uses only 2 subpixel
