22 June 2011
Today's smartphone scene is one of fierce competition and breakneck growth. Rarely though do announcements get any bigger than this. The Nokia N9 seemed forever stuck in rumorland, but never lost its grip on users' minds. The handset is rightfully enjoying as warm a reception...

My impression is that elops burning platform speech was a bit of bs, meant to soften nokia up for a wp7 shift. It wasn't an honest view of nokia. Troubled, absolutely. Burning platform, no way. Elop is a share holder in ms after all. Its in his best interest to marry the two.

So now I see this as an internal nokia bun fight. The employees who have lived and breathed independant os's and ecosystems now being told its no more due to the shift to wp7. They're fighting to get the n9 out to prove they still have it and head off elops wp7 dream. Elop meanwhile wants to quietly head off everything that threatens the nokia / wp7 marriage. I've worked in large corporations and see this sort of thing going on all the time.

I find it amusing that so many blogs highlight that Meego wont stand a chance against IOS' 250,000 apps and Androids x number of apps. I actually find that having too many apps turns off developers as the app market reaches maturity.

This is the bigger developers known for apps in the web, iPhone or Android.

Will they develop apps for Meego because "it's good for our face" even without anyone asking like in Android ?
Or will their response is something like "we'll consider it" or "we have open API, let the community do it" (which the community doesn't) or be more frank and say "not interested in such small platform"

Without that, at least for me the promise of more apps through open source is just a pipe dream. Unless Nokia will pay the developers to make the apps and fill the market, which they wont.
