Maemo also had UNIX, it has QT, and there's still not much official applications made for it.

Average Joe won't be writing their own apps.
Developers just do what they want, when they want.
More famous software developers and websites are not interested in making applications for anything other than for big user base of iPhone and Android.

UNIX from one end to another, or UNIX at one end and Java at the other... hmmm ... tough choice... i believe i preffer entirely UNIX..

                    Just your average Joe here.

I think Nokia nailed it with the N9 running the Meego/Maemo OS. It's got the looks, a great UI and the specs that touch all the right buttons with me. Cutting edge it ain't (more on par with the iphone 4 but with the ip5 coming out..) I've seen the Sea Ray as well and with what material available on-line so far, it just doesn't feel polished enough. The N9 is designed to have no home button but the MS Mango software needs three in front and an extra one for the camera on the side, which imho would be a waste of great hardware should the insist on shoehorning MS Mango into it without incorporating the current UI or at least putting Nokia's own spin on it.

I own an iphone and after the first few weeks of furious app hunting, I've settled down with the basic telephony, surfing and social services with a few apps every now and then for productivity and to keep myself occupied on those long meetings that go nowhere. But not much else. I think app support follows the Pareto principle. Get the top 300-500 or so apps for the Meego platform and that should address a significant portion of the consumer's needs. With QT in play, this shouldn't be too difficult a proposition (app quality vs. quantity). With Alien Dalvik, maybe even less so.

I'm of the opinion that Nokia should plan their next steps with the N9 carefully at this point and consider taking a play out of the Apple playbook. By re-branding the N9 into the "Swype" or whatever, it can take the N9 out of the current continuum of numbered products and just update it on an annual basis even as a testbed for future innovations and continue to support its Meego efforts should it prove profitable. This won't take all of Nokia's resources. The rest can be focused on taking the MS Mango across a whole product line and into continued presence (maybe even domination?) in the Smartphone Market. A dual pronged approach would also give the corporation options down the road whilst honoring its current agreements.

Nokia has had a great history for innovation and is a company renowned for great ideas, though time to market hasn't always been it's strong suit.

Whatever happens, I do hope Nokia supports the N9.
Because I like it, I'd like to buy it and I'm not alone.

If and when this comes out and it's much cheaper than the competition, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I still wonder why Nokia chose to abandon MeeGo when it's this beautiful. I certainly think this could compete with others on the market right now.

I do hope they'd reconsider into giving MeeGo another chance. Maybe they'll wait for actual sales as basis? Hmmm...

Why in the world Google wont let ovi run on Nokia android?
