Sony Ericsson Xperia ray review: Ray of light

28 September 2011
Honey, I shrunk the Xperia arc. No, that's a different story. And yes, we like the Sony Ericsson minis. But that's not how the real story of the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray goes. They did things to the Xperia arc...

Have been using it for 3 months. It runs 720p youtube videos without lag, unlike what gsmarena said about it running 480p with choppy frames. 1080p was an overkill though.

Casual gamers will find this phone sufficient. However, if you are looking at demanding games such as Six Guns from Gameloft, it does lag a bit during gameplay at scenes whereby there are many enemies charging at you.

However, I hate it when I hit the Home button and the desktop takes sometime to refresh itself; this happens when the previous app you were using eats a lot of RAM.

sony xperia ray..indeed is a powerful phone for its size. just bought it. Indeed a good phone. I guess sony ericson really know what we consumers wants. The battery suprises me for such a slim phone. I am a heavy user and phone lasted the whole day.

                              A few tips:

Set browser plugins (flash, etc) to on demand so that they don't slow down the browser when not needed. When you want to enable some flash content, you just have to click on it. 720p Youtube videos work fine, if they are jerky, set the player to fullscreen.

Games work great, I tried Riptide GP, Gameloft HD games, Angry Birds and more and everything worked fine. Riptide is the game with the best graphics available on the market.

Root the phone (google for it) and install titanium backup to remove unneeded sony crapware, but don't try it if you don't know what you're doing because you can render the phone unusable if you delete something important. Apps such as trackID, Neoreader or the sony stores are safe to remove.

Install an ad blocker from the market to remove those annoying ads in apps.

Lower the screen brightness if you want to save battery, leave bravia engine on as it only sharpens pictures and video and does not waste any battery.

Don't use task killers because closing background apps does not save any battery and can actually cause problems in some apps.

Video call only works in skype and similar apps due to android limitations.

Camera flash has to be turned on manually. It can also be used as a torch if you download a torch app from the market, very useful.

Every SonyE phone that came out in 2011 will get the ICS (Android 4) update in March.

Enjoy your new Ray, it's an amazing phone.

Nook, 18 Oct 2011Can anyone tell me more about the LED notification strip ar... moreIt signals whether you have missed calls or message by blinking green, and low battery by blinking red. When you use the phone it lights up white just to look cool.
Yuo can change the colors of the notifications using apps such as Blink, and you can have it light up any color you want.

Why does it say in the review that flash videos in youtube were choppy to watch? I tried 720P today and they played fine. Oh, and to zoom in the camera you use the volume buttons.
