Sony Ericsson Xperia ray review: Ray of light

28 September 2011
Honey, I shrunk the Xperia arc. No, that's a different story. And yes, we like the Sony Ericsson minis. But that's not how the real story of the Sony Ericsson Xperia ray goes. They did things to the Xperia arc...

ajay, 29 Sep 2011hey read the final verdict too...and they have given it 4.5... moreThe final verdict does not change the fact that RAY have some really big problems, and I have not read any reviewer that dare say anything but good things in the final words about any phone they have reviewed. These phone-review-sites are depending on the support and advertising from the big phone-companies, so they have to hide their real opinoion of their reviewed phones in the "fine print".
The facts remain, Ray does NOT have a scratch-resistant screen, and the screen is very unresponsive, and RAY can not even handle the beautiful Flux free live wallpaper!
Ray does not even have a camera-flashligt, but only a led-light that the user have to turn on before taking any photo or video!

      Final verdict

There is no doubt about it – never mind a rabbit, Sony Ericsson has pulled a gem out of the hat here. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is a joy to use (for 99% of tasks) and we're seriously impressed with the form factor and how it's squeezed it all in.

The only issue we have is that the remaining 1% of tasks that are less pleasurable to do with the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray (typing on the screen, for example) really do affect usage, so this is a handset you should try out before you buy.

The beauty is that if typing is your only gripe with the Xperia Ray, then the Xperia Arc will provide you with an almost identical experience, albeit in a larger form factor.

But that's also the problem – the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is not massively different to the rest of the Xperia line, which is starting to feel like its saturating the market with 'me too' handsets that don't offer anything uniquely different.

Not that this will matter to the majority of buyers who, like us, will be won over by its small size.

And there is no getting away from it – if you want something small that packs a punch and don't fancy Scrappy Doo in your pocket, then the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray is definitely a very worthy contender for consideration.

A small correction, GSMarena. There is a timer app included, but it's only accessible as a widget.

The Ray does not have a LED flash on it. It even states on the Sony Ericsson website that it is a 'photo light'. I work in the industry and have used it and know this is the case. Surely this is something that should be in the disadvantages list?? Other than this flaw it is a very impressive bit of kit

Just handled SE Ray (demo) yesterday. The photos of Se Ray on the net don't do it justice. It's a sexy phone. Very slim, and the all-glass front is pure class. LOL

The screen is very nice but once you have seen S-AMOLED, there's no turning back. :-) SE Ray's screen is sharper compared to S8500 though.

                I think I'll pass.

The color of the notification LED can be adjusted. Different colors can be assigned to missed calls, messages and e-mail. You'll need the free app "Blink" from the Android Market. Please note, however, that the LED won't flash until the screen is off or while on the charger.

Many other reviewers, techradar is one of them, are complaining about this:
"We did find that we often had to tap a button or function again because the first go didn't register. We had the same issue with the soft keys. It wasn't a deal breaker, but it was unresponsive enough for us to notice and get slightly frustrated." and "As with all modern mobile phones, the glass is apparently toughened. We couldn't see any literature that defined it specifically as Gorilla Glass but whatever it is, it's not great. Not only is the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray a fingerprint and dust magnet, the screen is also a scratch magnet. In the week that we had it, we noticed scratches appear at the rate of several per day. Don't get us wrong, they weren't huge, and indeed, we had to strain to look for them.
But if you're as OCD as us about keeping your precious looking precious, you won't like it. And putting a screen protector on (providing you can find one that fits exactly) will take away some of the sparkle." and "But in use, we found that issue with the screen's unresponsiveness kept rearing its head. We'd be tapping away and realise that keypresses hadn't registered and have to keep going back, which just got annoying after a while." and "We did install some nice new live wallpapers, but were dismayed to see that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray struggled with them. The standard Android ones were there, but when we tried to install the beautiful Flux free live wallpaper (which we've used on several Android handsets), it stuttered and stammered until we'd uninstalled and gone back to the original wallpaper."

It has an aluminum frame on the front. The back cover is different kind of plastics depending on which colour. It's more solid than any other Sony Ericsson phone. It does not squeak at all when twisting it.
Ray is a killer phone. No doubt about that.

I am using this phone currently and I must say it's a good powerful compact phone that may not be on the lines of Samsung galaxy s2 or HTC sensation, but nevertheless very impressive thanks to its great display and above average multimedia capabilities...

Can you guys please use the STANDARD colour when doing reviews? Hardly anyone (except ladies) will buy the red one, so it is disconcerting that you guys chose the red color for the review.

They're comparing it to iPhone 4? Really?
OK I use to have an X10, but SE made me regret it, without XDA I would've hated my ex-10.
Although nice specs.. hope it'll get SE out of the hole

So Sony Ericsson and other reviewers that also reviewed the Ray that mentioned it has a fully body aluminum or aluminum on the sides lied?

Now GSMarena is saying it is all plastic. Who is telling the truth? Sony Ericsson or GSMArena?
