Nokia 701 review: Belles and whistles

17 October 2011
Symbian Belle is on the march and the leader of the pack is the Nokia 701. It busts out the big guns - a 1,000 nit floodlight of a screen, a fast, modern processor and an up-to-the-minute connectivity package, complete with NFC. If you're experiencing a deja vu, rest assured...

Just wanted to make a quick comment in regard to the following comment made in the review:

"The layout of the ISO setting was a massive disappointment. It's a list (Auto, Low, Med, High) and you tap once to select and once again to activate. The Sharpness setting works the same way. Really, Nokia? It's just sad to insist on this ham-fisted approach to menus with each new version of the OS."

The reason some option menus remain on screen is because as you change the setting there is a direct impact on the viewfinder. There are times when you may want to try 2 or 3 settings before settling on the one which provides the desired outcome. Only such menus remain until you confirm them. Those that don't have direct viewfinder feedback hide once selected.

Hope that clarifies things a little.

achh...yehah. I forgot. Nokia's new phones (including this one and N8) are pentaband, got usb-on-the-go and tv-out. Great sound quality, fm transmitter, and better camera and video than most of android phones. Even if they have dual cores and gigs of ram. You know why? because they engineers don't have experience and think that more ram and mhz mean better quality? 1080p in mono sound and 3gp? No thank. I'd prefer 72p with stereo and great sound captured in mp4. What about andro or ios?
You still think it's better than symbian?

eeerm...sorry dude, but you don't understand meaning of "smartphone" phrase. Do you really think that android or ios are smartphones...because of what? because they have huge app store or android market? WRONG!
It's about versality and how much can you depend on your phone.
You got maps, camera, voice recorder, e-mail, internet (I can watch youtube on my N8 with no problem....do you really think that watching 1080 on 4 inch display is better than 480p???? How can it be????!!!...you have to buy larger data plan instead), good battery and apps. If you are so retarded that you know only ovi store...well, goodluck. I can give you any apps you would like to which is available on symbian platform too. You just need to look "a little bit deeper" in internet.
And those apps don't look worse than those on ios or android. So cut the crap.
"First" truly known and popular smartphones were those on symbian, and nothing changes.
Don't you even think that your precious ios or android is better. Because it's not. It has more flaws than you think, but you are too blind to see google/apple child.

Youtube is working fine in the native browser, but just at 360p. Or you could switch to play online videos in the native player.

Those things missing are a matter of choice. Contrast, auto focus, flash, have nothing to do with the phone being highend or midrange. 701 is a smartphone, you don't seem to know what it means.

Guys you should mention that Nokia Store is in soon for a major refresh, currently in beta.

Symbian's 3rd party activity is not dead by any means, indy developers are producing plenty of apps for it.

Personally I now use a WP device however.
