Nokia 701 review: Belles and whistles

17 October 2011
Symbian Belle is on the march and the leader of the pack is the Nokia 701. It busts out the big guns - a 1,000 nit floodlight of a screen, a fast, modern processor and an up-to-the-minute connectivity package, complete with NFC. If you're experiencing a deja vu, rest assured...

Anonymous, 18 Oct 2011Can't help wondering what kind of world these gadget review... moreYou make me laugh as you seem to know nothing about Nokia mobiles or any other mobiles.
Drop iphone, Samsung g2 and Nokia 701 or any other phone from a 3 or 4 meters high. Guess which mobile fairs out of the lot.
You should check the Nokia test centre videos. Google it

Can't help wondering what kind of world these gadget reviewers live in. In my world one has to cope with things like weather and temperature changes (moisture) every day. For multi-media-purposes I'd prefer any tablet, notebook or desktop computer, not a tiny phone even if it may have a 5" screen. A phone is primarily a mobile connunication device so it needs to be able to cope with real life. Very few phones, with the exception of a handful of IP67-certified handsets, can cope with real-world conditions. This one, I'm afraid, is just as uselsess as most other phones. Without robustness all other features are irrelevant.

AnonD-4697, 17 Oct 2011 Display is very bright but has low contrast Browse... moreI'm not sure if you know what a smartphone iss ince you're comparing it to ''mid-high end''. If using 10-20 apps are important to you, then the Nokia store has got you covered with what most would download. I'm with you on the fixed-focused one, not sure why. ''Symbian days are counted'', *sigh* people just LOVE to chant this death wish huh? It's getting annoying.

We already talked about the screen in the preview and Wow GSMarena,Bravo.Good things about a nokia phone.

"we'll go over it again - it's hands-down the brightest mobile screen we've tested. Nokia promise 1,000 nits of brightness when a typical LCD usually runs in the 300-600 range. The Nokia 701 actually goes a little beyond the promised value - don't miss our test in the hardware chapter."

The contrast may have decreased from the pre-production unit.. But it still is good, better than many of phones.. So you shouldn't be making it a "Con" I guess..

AnonD-22157, 18 Oct 2011thanks my Lord finally i found someone that thinks like me!... moreThey are not blind they are ignorant, people don't have time to fiddle about their mobiles. Symbian failed in graphical interface and now they are bit late but think it will make little difference in countries where Nokia is still the master. Iphone is like a family member to many people in USA. Its gonna be hard for Nokia and Microsoft to break that. Elop thinks anything successful in USA will success in the world, so he is widely ignoring rest of the world to succeed in US. If they fail Nokia will fall.
The equation they think will succeed is
                USA = 50% world = 50%
                If USA fail they fail.
Its true in case of Iphone Apple makes more money in USA alone and their 70% revenue comes from USA. Apple in USA is like a cult and people are hardcore fans including lot of politicians and lobbyists.Microsoft and Nokia have very hard task in hand and its not easy. Elop is more concentrating to succeed in USA than in rest of the world that's why he is completely ignoring the success of N9.

The screen is still too narrow. 60mm atleast please!? W/c is one reason I kept looking somewhere else and delay myself considering another nokia. Sigh! Boy those finnish R & D designers must have such tiny thumbs!?

Not the best design but certainly not bad... I am impressed with the way Belle has made a comeback... Now work on the apps Nokia... But I was thinking with Nokia focusing on WP Mango as their priority, where is Symbian gonna fit in their scheme of things??? And one more thing, I fail to understand why Nokia keeps on making the cameras on its phones a fixed-focus one?? Nokia makes one of the best cameras on a phone but making it autofocus will surely make it better... Dont ya think guys???

Too bad this Belle upgrade will take too long to come to existin devices =/ i got an e7 and im pretty much satisfied with it(execept by the camera, now i see n8 as a better choise) I completely agree about symbian resources are far ahead of android and iOS that need an app for any stupid task and my brother galaxy tab cant even change a config for itself (eg. when i open the google map app its stops and say that the GPS is not enabled -.- same for wifi, thats disgusting)

for ppl who dont need stupid stuff on the phone symbian still very recomendable, and nokias are from far the most durable phones on the market

                      (shame iphone...)

(n8 is more than a year on the market, and still going to get updates and have the best camera so far)

there are lot of stuff i could list to show symbian advantages but hatters always gonna hate...

I guess Nokia made a big improvement on the Symbian, caught up a little to the competition, but why does it have to look so ugly?

Bit harsh considering it sells outright for 250 Euro. When comparing a phone with its competition, a more logical approach would be to look at the specs of similarly priced handsets, which in this case include the samsung galaxy ace, htc wildfire s, motorola defy/xt5 etc.. The models you have listed as alternatives each retail for at least $100 more than the 701

I am currently using 701, let me give you all few more important advantages to other OS.

                                      1. Proper file manager (GSMArena covered this), i cannot live without this, amazing file transfer copying or moving files is easy which is lacking in other OS
                                      2. USB on the go - brilliant feature, i can connect my 32gb usb flash drive with movies loaded and watch them no issues there.
                                      3. DAB radio - i have a DAB radio device from nokia which gives me more than 60 channels to choose while i am traveling in UK. Yes battery life is fantastic even after 4 hours continuous DAB radio listening Just 2% down.
4.There are quite a lot of third party apps in Nokia Store (not Ovi store as mentioned by gsmarena).
                                      5. brilliant Nokia maps navigation with Nokia 3.8 updated from Nokia beta labs. (compared with other navigation devices and comes with plenty of languages of your choice to download).

People are worried about apps all times but honestly how many apps do people use in reality on a daily basis. Most of my friends iphones and android phone have games installed and few proper apps and they are available on nokia store and yes games too.
Nokia 701 is an amazing phone, people who really want to do what they want to do with their phone they have to go for symbian phones which are way ahead of other OS. I understand that symbian 3 is bad with their UX UI, but with symbian Anna & Belle you will not go wrong. Last but not least NFC is enabled and nokia knows how to make the feature more enjoyable and entertaining than just use it as a payment wallet which other OS are working so hard to achieve.

Honestly Symbian Belle in feature wise is way ahead of other OS may be atleast 2 or 3 firmware upgrades ahead.
