8 megapixel mega shootout: Picture this

10 November 2011
In a time honored tradition, we have the latest and greatest cameraphones lined up and ready to shoot for the top. It's been a while, we know. The last time we had a taste of 8MP sharpshooting action was in the distant 2008. 8MP then and 8MP now...

LG optimus 2x is not included because it is will be regarded as the best camera phone or smartphone for that matter if the gingerbread or ice cream sandwich will be upgraded on the LG OPTIMUS 2X.

First time ever i have felt that gsmarena is biased towards iphone 4s.
      1. Gsmarena should have taken pictures and then gsmarena should ask people through polling that which pic is the best and then in the end, reveal the mobile phones as gsmarena has done in previous camera reviews. but this time, gsmarena is biased and announced the winner in hurry.
      2. Why gsmarena didnt involve N8 ? gsmarena should have written that N8 is best but this review is amongst 8MP shooters.
      3. Why gsmarena didn't include N86, Innov8 in this shoot out? as these mobiles are best in 8MP category???
      4. Why gsmarena forgot Lg Optimus 2x? and why involved two models from HTC ? everyone knows that HTC is lagging in camera section.
      please reply gsmarena.

AnonD-26818, 11 Nov 2011Nokia fanboys always brag about N8 but its not the best eve... moreWho cares about Samsung?? With Samsung build quality probably no one is able to use that phone til now.also I don't think that phone got any support from Samsung unlike n8 which is still getting updated. Also my n8 is more than 12 months old and still going strong.gives battery life of around 35-40 hrs with moderate to heavy use and I still have a Nokia 6620 from 2005 as backup and it just can't break!! and chk out n8 shootout with a 12mp from Samsung (pixon if I remember) and see the difference. Thank you very much but go sell your Sammy ©rap some place else!

No other manufacturers can beat Nokia's Carl Zeiss powered camera smartphones. If anyone did, I think it's the one who reviews.

Iphone 4s is a utter failure even when comes to camera (the complete phone package is a dud) coz it does nt offer d user option to coustomize setting..I refuse to be slave of some1's idea of photo..I rather choose my own settings and get d results that I want..

I agree about Iphone 4S taking best pictures if it comes to preserved detail but colors are a bit off.

Also, Arc comes second, and SGS2 third. Then the N9 and then HTCs.
I agree about voting next time this comes up, a few days before the full review comes up. That would be awesome.

What is more important The sensor or the lens? Personally the sensor is the most crucial part in a camera. Clear win for Sony. To bad for all nokia fan boy. Carl Zeiss so overrated.

My goodness, there's a lot of fanbois and commentards...

Firstly, thank you GSM Arena for taking the time to do such a thorough review. Most tech sites wouldn't do anything even close to this, let alone as scientific.

I do agree that next time you should keep identities secret until after the review - it lets people agree with your valid conclusions and then foam at the mouth when their beloved devices aren't as good as they think.

I think it's pretty safe to say that the iPhone 4S is the best 8MP camera out there. It's still not the best cameraphone overall; the N8 holds that title and probably will for quite some time, with the Satio sitting in silver medal position (video aside). But cameras are only one aspect of a device.

I was disappointed with Nokia in this test. The N8 is a legend, and comes from a family of legends such as the N82, N95 and N86. That said, the N9 probably lags behind because it's essentially a beta device and I don't imagine Nokia spent as much time as normal on developing the camera drivers and software as they would have for a phone that does get sold in the UK, USA and other main markets.

The (sad) reality is that the N9 is a footnote in history. Nokia's new top tier device is the Lumia 800 and that's what should be getting tested in comparison. I expect that the Lumia 800 will have a bit more polish to it than the N9, and think it'll be a strong competitor to the iPhone 4S and SGS2.

I'd like to see GSM Arena throw in these extended imaging tests when they review it.

It also occurs to me that great as this comparison was, it's a bit early. The Nokia Lumia 800 is the first high-end but mainstream device Nokia have released in around a year

just 3 remarks and a comment:
1 - iphone uses exactly the same sony camera components as the arc s. but different hardware
2 - there are some mistakes. for example arc s as touch focus
3 - arc won the 2011-2012 EISA award for best smartphone camera

comment: seems to me this test isn't completely exempted...

Why is the LG Optimus 2x not included? It has an 8meg cam also and can do 1080P recording. I know it will be floored by the other 8meg phones but i would've liked to see the comparison side by side.
The nokia and sony etc can only do 720P but they were included.
What happened to your optimus 2x gsmarena?

Listen to sites who test cameras for a living instead:

"Under ideal lighting conditions there's no better mobile phone camera on the market."
