Sony Xperia S vs. Samsung Galaxy S II: S-hootout

09 March 2012
Released nearly a year apart, the Sony Xperia S and the Samsung Galaxy S II are not that different - both are flagship droids with dual-core CPUs and 4.3" screens. But the newer Xperia S brings some fine upgrades, like a 12MP camera and a 720p screen.

One thing, I wanna see how that XS would stand against a Gn-7000 ;) Put the screens aside coz this is not gonna be fair to the XS, then let's talk performance :)

Wow looks like Sony's Timescape UI is now the best manufacturer skin - it's closer to stock Android and way more optimised than the heavier Samsung Touchwiz, Motoblur and of course HTC Sense.

The Xperia S trashes the other gingerbread phones on the sunspider benchmark test. Can't wait to see what the XS can do when Sony upgrades it to ICS! Will be interesting to see if HTC especially can claw back some ground with Sense 4.0. Not expecting much from Samsung as they can't/won't even bring ICS with their new Touchwiz to the original SGS.

Cool review. Excellent camera comparison but what about some night shots for stills and video?

as much as i love sony (sony ericsson), there is no denying that the nxt series (wwe anyone?) came out a year too late.had they were announced last year, these guys would make more than a splash, even a BOOM maybe.

sammy guys jst stp talking abt performence cz u guys havnt even seen an XS in real. If u hv a brain u shud knw 1.5 GHz is fastr than 1.2 ghz. Both r havng 1gig f ram. Sony UI is nt as powr hungry as touchwiz. So XS wil never lag than a GS2. If there is a lag in XS thr shud b more lagging in GS2. I hv usd GS2 and it dsnt lag. So XS wil never lag bcz it has a bettes cpu n a gpu

Just ran these test on my stock SGS2 running the latest WXLA4 2.3.6 rom, and my results where: BenchmarkPI 583ms, Browsermark 95002, Linpack 87.302, SunSpider 2012,4ms and NenaMark2 51,8fps

Maybe you should have updated the sgs2 before running these tests; I'm getting ~100k in browser mark with the latest 2.3.6 rom.

                              LOL

Good to see lots of passionate "my phone is better than your phone" comments!!

A bit of perspective from both sides please...

                              Let's all be honest...

Of course the XPS is going to perform better on benchmarks - it's released a year later and has a better processor - it should perform better or it'd be in serious trouble!

                              BUT

As people keep commented 'user experience' - well as a GS2 owner who would like to get a Sony phone next upgrade (love the idea of the 'smart' accessories') the problem I have is that the XPS is simply not enough of an upgrade after having the GS2 for over a year.. and yes many people have said it, but the lack of expandable memory will kill this phone for so many... I have a 32gb storage card on top of the 16gb that the GS2 gives me and it's just about enough... also the external memory card gives me the safety of backing up photos, etc. in case of crashes, etc.

Everything else for me is perfect with the XPS - I don't think quad core offers enough yet.. and the HTC One X doesn't have memory OR a radio (absolute joke) but long-term (think in another 18-24 months) the XPS is seriously going to suffer...

And the fact that the GS2 will gets ICS before the XPS says something else too... the reason that the XPS doesn't have ICS is simply because it has been rushed... that is also why it doesn't have the new Sony screen that the XPP has or an aluminium unibody...

It was unveiled too early without realised where the market would be when released...

                              BUT

I will agree with everyone on the GS2 when they say it's the most boring looking phone ever with one of the worst UIs... however, these can be changed with a nice case or a launcher app... you can't change the fact that the XPS has compromised specs for a flagship...

                                Hi fanboys!
Before all of you argue which phone is better, PLEASE use both a sony xperia s and a samsung galaxy s II then compare. If you don't have $$$ or means to try both for a resonable time peroid, then shut up and stop trying to argue which is better.
NO review is better than a review u make yourself...
and one more thing... please note that different people look out for different thigns in a phone. Some may want a higher resolution scren, some may want a higher battery life, some may want more space, it depends on what suits the user

If you check the pixtures or read the comments below, you would agree that the XPERIA S dominates the iPhone 4's camera. The editor stated otherwise.

You can also check out the shootout they did, they basically said that the iPhone 4 camera is better. Yes 4, not even 4S.

I would rate the build quality of XS 9/10, only con I see is the flapping ports. Apart from that, it has an outstanding build quality.

since samsung is supplier for sony for many components.

Hardware of samsung is always cheap too bad , iPhone 4S , Galaxy S2 , Nexus and Xperia are all cheap junk then if ur opinion is true.

AnonD-38309, 10 Mar 2012Ah actually the Galaxy S2 sold 20 million versions includin... more'A more serious problem with the Xperia S' hardware isn't the way it looks, but the way it's built. There are seams everywhere, where plastic meets plastic around the translucent bar, around the port covers, around the scratch resistant screen and around the rear cover. (Note: the video review says "Gorilla Glass", but scratch resistant is right.) These gaps attract dust, make the device feel unfairly cheap considering the high quality materials, and occasionally cause the port covers to pop open if they catch on your finger or pocket'.

'When sized up against a long rubric of criteria, rather than just its entertainment credentials, there's little to make the Xperia S a compelling purchase'

These lines are taken from engadget's review of Sony Xperia S.

and it means Xperia S look cheap.
