HTC One X review: eXtra special

12 April 2012
How about this for a rebound after a rather quiet second half of last year. A massive change of game plan sees HTC focus on a special few products instead of trying to create a smartphone for every taste. An outstanding result of this effort...

            Hi All,

I highly recommend not to get this phone, the battery is the worst I've ever come across. In one week I've had this mobile replaced twice cause the battery just dies way to quick. I lose 15% power in 15 minute just checking out facebook replying to 3 text messages and I have all the power saver options on. Samsung is so much better with battery, even iPhone is.

Taking the second one back now for a third, after third replacement they allow to change for a different brand.

HTC need to go hang themselves with such a poor poor performance in battery life. I'll never touch a HTC mobile again.

            Thanks

            Craig

I haven't experienced any lag with this device, though it does get extremely hot (yes, extremely) when playing graphically intensive games for more than a few minutes. Hot to the point that it causes discomfort when touching certain parts, particularly the top left of the display when in landscape orientation. However, it will warn you when it's running dangerously hot by flashing the LED green and red. Once you exit the game, the flashing LED will cease after one or two minutes.

I suspect the discrepancy in what users have said of this issue may be largely attributed to differences in the temperature of the environment in which they operate the device.

I NEVER thought an LCD screen would look so good as it does on the new HTC One X.

A lot of us rave about the AMOLED screen on Samsung's and the Lumia 800. After comparing the HTC Sensation to the Samsung Galaxy SII when they were first released, I was so blown away by the AMOLED, it was hard to go back to an LCD screen.

But this, HTC One X, with its Super IPS LCD2 is hands down, the best screen in the market.

My Super AMOLED HD doesn't even come close to this thing.

What's the difference between the two, you ask?

The AMOLEDs will always have best blacks, but the LCD 2 has more accurate colours, whites and viewing level.

Furthermore, the HTC One X has the Super IPS (In Plane Switching technology), which gives even better colours and high visibility under direct sunlight.

Seriously, forget about the AMOLED, besides having an excellent display, the HTC One X also has the screen floating right under the image.

Very similar to the Nokia Lumia 800 which I mentioned that has one of the best features of the screen.

As I grasped the white polycarbonate One X, which feels extremely light but doesn't make it any less solid to hold, to study HTC's new Ice Cream Sandwich with Sense 4.0, I couldn't help noticing how near the display was to the glass.

You know how when you look at your phone, it's obvious that there is a glass enclosing the screen. Well, if you get a chance to look at the One X, it will be a totally different experience for you.

Besides the screen, the line of One's from Taiwan's HTC, is equipped with something called ImageSense, which is a newly developed sensor chip.

Basically, your camera's megapixels are just megapixels. On a phone, you don't really need it to go beyond eight, but if it does, it's nice to have it.

What takes good pictures is a camera's sensor chip. Like in your Canon DSLRs, it would have Digic III, IV and V processors.

Similar to HTC's ImageSense, which takes extremely good pictures in low-light, and I had a pretty decent picture taken of me in an almost pitch black room.

It also takes pictures almost instantaneously, like the Galaxy Nexus' camera which snaps as fast as you can press the shutter.

The One X's camera is 8 megapixels, and records 1080p videos at 30 frames per second.

As for what's under the hood, you've got the phone that has blown every other device out of the water in terms of benchmark scores.

The first ever 1.5 GHz quad-core phone with Nvidia's Tegra 3 processor has been running away with benchmark tests as compared to other existing devices.

Memory-wise, it has 32GB on board with no expansion slot (that's always disappointing). I usually prefer to have an expansion slot because I would usually store pictures taken on the microSD card.

As for Ice Cream Sandwich, HTC's custom skin, Sense, is now version 4.0.

HTC's Sense 3.x was a little too obtrusive for me. It felt like it's getting in the way of what Android is supposed to be.

Sense 4.0 is somewhat like that but it feels like HTC has toned down the "non-Sense" on the One series.

The phone is extremely responsive, well with four cores it should be, and loading the browser was almost instant.

Now that HTC has upped the game, it's up to Samsung's Galaxy SIII or LG's D1L to impress.

This phone is crap, I had it and send it back. It has serious connectivity problems, it didn't want to connect to my phone provider and that was not faulty phone, because in my country 4 of us got it and they all had same problem recognizing SIM card for more than 10 seconds. If a phone can not make a call, what is the other stuff worth? Nothing I guess...
