Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preview: First look

28 June 2012
Google used its I/O 2012 conference in San Francisco to unveil the latest release of Android. Carrying the version number 4.1, the new Android Jelly Bean is supposed to come as more of a polish to Ice Cream Sandwich, than a major game changer. Don’t think for a second though...

It really is a shame for the manufacturers of devices and Google, so much fragmentation with and without flash player I say Android for me anymore. It's really a lack of respect with us customers! google do something! iPhone 5 in head.

                  Lions in the jungle....

And a prediction. There are currently web sites where people submit anecdotes about misadventures from following navigation devices.
I predict a new bunch of websites devoted to strange and incorrect responses to Google Voice Search and Siri. If the system learns by peoples choices form searches then it will perpetuate incorrect beliefs and be swayed by the masses of stupid people.
Yes, it's lions in the jungle :)

I for one enjoy the nexus lockscreen just the way it is. It's a lot more stylish this way. I personaly think it would look worse being crowded with notification.
But this is just my opinion.

                      2 more things.

                      1) really nice article by GSMarena

                      2) funny that when you ask who is president of Cambodia you get a top hit with a list of Kings :)
It isn't really that smart to ask who is president anyway. The generic question would be who is leader. What happens if you ask who is president of a country that has a chairman or prime minister? It doesn't even return an accurate hit when you ask for the exact title and they put that in a promotion. But I guess it's an American ad and many people will actually think that every country has a president. Not getting at Americans (it could be the opposite in an English ad), it's just odd.

Mr.JiG, 29 Jun 2012Just hoping that this new (upcoming) update is not going to... moreIf you like watching videos or listening to music or playing games on the web..yes it will all be 90% cut off, because 4.1 doesn't support flash. Html5 doesn't support browser games and nobody uses it for controls or music yet. Video is limited at best for the next couple years And more resource intensive, so be ready for the battery drain and heat!

I was already put off by the heavy nature ICS so the Butter performance focus is nice too see. The benchmarks don't really show it but then benchmarks have never been good for comparing versions.

I am sceptical with all the voice recognition stuff. I would give the voice recognition functionality in Gingerbread a 2 out of 10. Unless you learnt English English or American English then the hit rate is so appallingly low that it's just not worth it. It is laughable how different Google Navigation's voice predictions are from what you say. In a laughable how sure Google were that they would be right that you get a list of predictions with no 'speak again' type option.

Voice recognition needs to improve some 5000% before it is convenient. Is there any information to indicate that they have attempted to allow for non-common accents at all?

Considering how much of JB voice is (and how many other features I wouldn't care about) the voice situation may be something that gets me looking elsewhere.

I must say though that the last Microsoft Device I used for voice commands was even worse. It would understand everything up until the confirmation when it can't understand the word 'Yes'. Completely unusable because of the word 'Yes'. You could teach your device how you say all sorts of other commands but not the word 'Yes'. Mindless MS dev fail!
Microsoft would have to have come a very long way to offer any competition.

On my old nokia smarthphone i can see notifications on lockscreen that i have a missed call from X and i have 2 unread emails and 5 whatsapps etc....

Why don't you use the lockscreen wisely?!?! WHY!?! I have a huge screen that is not wisely used?!?

Is it logical or smart that on Google's flagship, you can't see your notification on lockscreen?!?! Not even the slightest of it?!?!

Damn take some lessons from HTC lockscreens!!!
