Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 preview: Starting over

09 August 2012
Taking a second to think can result in second thoughts. In the Galaxy 10.1 Note's case it resulted in a second pair of CPU cores and double the RAM - a lethal combination, which only a select few of its foes dare stand against. This is in case you are wondering...

Both apple and samsung fans will have to put their all Pads away when IBM launch Think Pad 2. Guess what it got Intel core i5. Full computing power just as a PC. Also Microsoft surface too will come into market. What you guys really gonna do?

It would be really interesting to know how well this thing handles note taking (and not just drawing). Especially how fast the response is and how accurately you can write - all the reviews I've seen indicate that palm rejection doesn't always work. In addition, I haven't seen anyone trying to write in reasonable sized fonts... What's the point of a notepad if you can only fit 3 words per line?

too bad, it uses propietary port.
i was hoping that this new Galaxy Note will use micro USB port just like the original Galaxy Note.

Leon, 09 Aug 2012Can't understand, Samsung produces PLS Retina panels for IP... moreThis is where the biggest misconception starts and this why Apple makes so much money because they are great at what they do. This is where Samung fanboys should listen for a million times. Apple does the R&D, put the designs together on the blue print, offer it out to major manufactures for the best bid with certain quality and quantities in mind and doing it without major overhead cost from machines and factories. Simply, Apple is the brain of the operation why Samung, Sharp, Lg, etc just sits back and build. If Samsung uses the same panel that Apple designed, then ladies and gentlemen, you will see a huge law suit in place.

I have a quad-core exynos device (S3) and a tegra 3 device (transformer prime) and it's no contest.

The tegra SOC is just plain awful. lacks horsepower and the framerates leave little to be desired.

                    Hello guys,

i can confirm some of your comments here in a non biased way, let me tell you some true facts story, if GSMArena could review my tablet, they would confirm my sayings..

I received the latest Asus Transformer TF700T (Infinity) last saturday, i have wanted a quad core tablet WITH a full HD screen for a longtime (without IOS). Yes i had seen rumors of the latest Note a few days before but i didn't cancel my order due to its screen being only 1280*800..

So let's get to the point.

-My tablet got a nice metal/aluminium body. It is cool yes, but with a Tegra 3 quad core CPU, it gets hot, VERY hot while not in "eco" mode, like (simply) copying many files, playing even basic games (like Diner Dash 2), let's not talk about Dead Trigger.

-Full HD resolution is great according to a friend which came to test it "almost like an iPad 3" as he said, but personnaly i haven't been "wowed", i tried to look a few 1080p x264 movies, maybe it's due to screen size, pixels density isn't wowing me despite 1920*1200, and more, LCD is disappointing (especially on dark/Black colors) due to backlighting (when you are used yo your LED/Plasma TV's and SAMOLED smartphones like me).

-I have to also mention, full HD resolution despite ICS is only at its beginnings, seems like many things are getting blurred and just zoomed to fit screen if not using only a part of it.
Many recent games just won't work or crash (maybe some Asus's system instability), we need developpers to get active for full HD (those games work well on a S3 in 720p res).

Defaut Gallery isn't using full image resolution (zoom max on a photo, then try same on your computer, you definitely don't get same picture), i had noticed that on phones before since GB. And now i can be sure that it's not the screen resolution's fault since it's higher here than on my own computers.

-I know you are seeing here benchmarks, but i have a S3 and i quickly compared a few games and even just system's behavior, Exynos is far better than a Tegra 3, installing apps while browsing your tablet is so smoother, i can't tell about games since they aren't running at same resolutions, but in quite a few games it's not very smooth (Babel Rising, Dead Trigger has a few hiccups too, Sonic 4 EP2 isn't so fast..) So either Exynos may help on full HD or we'll need next generation CPU/GPU for a solid smooth gaming experience.

So, to sum up, i'm quite disappointed by my full HD experience, at least with a Tegra 3 processor.
To friends, i would recommend a lower res tablet for now, or that Note 10.1 which looks more appealing with its added values for multitasking than my blend one.
The screen and system are requiring more power, so a greater battery depletion i read (at least i can use it a full day without too much gaming, not adding my dock to the count).

Web browsing is clear, just like on a computer, for the rest, i haven't noticed anything special frankly despite i have owned/used like 5 other tablets in the last 12 months.

Hope i helped you thinking more about "real usage situations".

Leon, 09 Aug 2012Can't understand, Samsung produces PLS Retina panels for IP... moreI think they used the "low-res" screen to make the tablet more affordable. Also there's some talk that it would be a bit hard(er) for the CPU/GPU to handle. It does make some sense imo. I mean, the ipad3 screen is simply beautiful, hands down the best I've ever seen, but those things just get really hot. If you don't own one, try going to the apple store and playing with it for a few minutes. It's a great thing, but technologically speaking, I just don't think we're there yet.

I should have waited for Galaxy Note 10.1.

My iPad is having low memory issues and lag when I play big games quite often.

After a few big HD games, music and photos, the storage is full and I can't expand it with sdcard.

And I can't charge it with the computer and I hate to look for power socket all the time.

The screen is with over crowded awful icons and very few customization.

My Galaxy Tab 7.7 was horribly slow with Honeycomb and I upgraded to iPad3. But Galaxy Tab 7.7 is more enjoyable now with ICS. It's much smoother and lots of customization.

[deleted post]You are wrong there, iOS has 6 flash browsers in appstore, if someone really need that. In my opinion flash is useless.

I bet you are those who think computer without flash is same than iOS device without flash, its totally different thing and maybe you android users also going to see that after jellybeam.

Flash in mobile devices is so overrated, even google and adobe admit that, but still android fanboys keep thinking ita most important thing ever :)

I bet you guys are going to eat your words after jelly beam, soon you all going to say flash i useless too.

Where you need flash? Can you give some examples, maybe urls?
