How can't you see anyone choosing another tablet - where do you have 3g here? Once you get out of home you're disconnected which makes a device like this loosing 90% of its functionality.
Google should have thought about providing a little more expensive version also but with cellular connectivity.

Use Airdroid or something similar to get files on and off it from whatever device on your network.
Also get an OTG cable (coupla £s/$s), then able to plug your external hdd's into it (was watching an HD film (6.8GB file in NTFS) from my 500GB external drive no probs last night)...

When the first ipad was announced every one said it's just an iphone/ipod with a big screen.
Now Google's flagship Jelly Bean device -Nexus 7- is just a square shaped Galaxy Nexus with a big screen.
It's really sad that a lot of people hate apple but the good thing that they never lose.

I've heard they have ha... more..not everybody want pay for a sim card. i know u have plenty of cash to spend, and your mama pay yur bills, do u think i am interested to pay another 60 bucks to get internets( in asia or africa where 4g doesn't exist) or to give call when i have already a phone.
so dont talk of what u dont know...ok?

Did Google have the right tactics?
I've heard they have had some supplie shortages, then wouldn't that suggest that their initial order for components wasn't large enough, or that they didn't upscale production enough?
Apple kan keep margins high despite putting things like that retina iPad display in a unit, due to the fact that they make huge orders for components.
Google has the money, so really they should have piled up, and prepared for a hugh success and then made it happen.
But to make that happen, I really think that they should have put a 3G module inside.
They should have skipped the WiFi only alltogether, they want people to use their cloud services, so they should try to make sure people will have acess to that as much as possible.
I think they also should have made it possible to make calls with the device (and bundled it with at least a low quality mono headset). For some, that would have made Nexus 7 a phone replacement, for some it would use an extrasim, for some an extra contract/prepaid, then Google could get as many as possible to sign for a dataplan to use their cloud-storage on the go.
And with built in 3G, a lot of units would be sold on contracts, and that would have had a huge impact on sales.
Of course, they should have put a camera on the back as well, for those who would have bought it as a smartphone replacement. For those of us who want to take pictures to remember things, for those who use it to show things during calls/webcam-sessions. And for those who wants to use it for augumented reality-apps and certain games.
But it didnt have to be a high quality module, just an ok one, with autofocus and cameralight and ability to record 720p.
If google had added that, and really believed in their own product and bought enough components, they could have gotten better deals, and maybe even been able to keep the price for the 8GB version. When you think of it, the sales potential would be much greater, so really they should have bought even bigger volumes, so really that should have been possible.
And when you think that a lot of those 16GB units would be sold on contracts, they would have been able to sell even more, and should have bought even bigger volumes.
And when you think about how they would pretty much ensure that almost all android tablets sold would be Nexus 7, since it would pack almost all features ot the rest at a lower price, they would have sold even more units and could have ordered even greater volumes.
Sure, it would make it very hard for other manufactors of Android tablets, with Samsung only having Oled and S-pen, and Asus and Acer having Full HD 10 inchers, but at prices that wouldn't come close in value.
But, and this is the importat thing, I think that had google done this, they could have taken on the iPad in sales, maybe even beaten it. And that would have meant a lot for the future of android tablets.
(then they should have perhaps warned other makers that something like that would come out so that they would have been carefull releasing products that didnt offer extra features, so that those makers wouldnt been to hurt). And we have to see it from the right perspective, the tablet market is nothing like the smartphone market... Apple were never as big on smartphones, others didnt have as much problem selling their products and the Nexus mobiles had their roll as niche products, in the tablet market Google really should have gone in to make a shift with the Nexus 7, they kinda did, but I dont think they really put enough effort in to it.
Personaly I still would have wanted S-pen and micro SD-cardslot, but for that price and those features I probably would have bought both just for fun.

If it had a camera on the back, that could be used for taking notes, I do that quite a bit with my phone, but when I get a tablet, I will start doing it with that instead.
With this I can't.
Google showed their glasses concept, but think a tablet doesnt need a camera for augumented reality apps? I might not use it, but its not in line with google straegics.
So I would say not having a camera on the back is a dissadvantage. Sure the camera doesnt have to be all that good, but it has to be, and it has to have auto-focus, and prefferebly a camera light that can also be used as a torch.
Google restricted the memory in favour of their cloud services???
Why then does it not come with 3G?
Not in line with google strategics, just strange to me.
It might even end up hurting android tablet sales in the end. A wifi-only despite Mifi's and tethering phones are very likely to end up as a home tablet. And the need for home tablets is not that great. And people will forget to charge it, and not having a charger nearby, cause it will probably move around in the house a lot, means that people will quite often either end up using their computer (even laptops don't move around as much as tablets), or having to look for that charger to use it. That will limit the useability of the tablet. A tablet that people also take with them is much more likely to be charged.
Many of these Nexuses 7 will end up on the shelf, cause people will not really see the pratical use in the end. People will start to think tablets are not for me, despite there beeing lots of other tablets that offer 3g or other additional extras that might have been what that person needed to be won over by a tablet.
It should have had 3G and calling capabilities, a 7" tablet surely can be used as a phone, with bluetooth, wired handsfree or as a speaker phone. That would have been a great bonus (thrown in a cheap wired mono handsfree in the box), and probably sold them some extra units for people that cant afford both, Google can not be sure those people will chose another Android unit, they might sign up for an iPhone on contract.
At least texting could have been very popular from a device like this.
And with 3G, it would be found on contract, really cheap.
Without it, its not the device for me. And the same goes for a lot of other people.
Sure it will sell, Google just have to hope that it doesnt end up hurting the android tablet market in the end, and not only for the above mentioned reason. Also the pricing is a problem, sure it misses a lot of things, but the tablets that adds those things are much more expensive (or are really cheaply made with low quality components, low resolution screens, weak cpus and so on), making consumers feel those tablets are not as good deals, and that might actually end with the consumer leaving the store without a tablet alltogheter.
Experienced value for money is not always the same thing as value for money. You have the chassi and the display, you have the CPU, and one camera, and built in storage and a few other things and all for 199, adding 3G, back camera and SD slot does not feel like 200 extra of add ons, when you could get another Nexus 7 for the same price. Components can be more expensive than your experienced value of them, and fitting them in to unit that still has to be compact really hurts the value as well. Plus the 8GB model is sold at pretty much cost, others can't do that, so it yet again hurts the feeling of value for the other tablets out there.
For me, micro-sd or even full SD-card slots are pretty much a must, at least with this little memory built in (if it came with 64, or maybe 32, it wouldn't have been usch a problem). I have local music and offline spotify music in my phone (and computer), and I would have that in a tablet as well. My phone has 32GB memorycard inside + the built in memory. With Nexus 7 at tops I get 16GB including the built in memory.
But others can probably live with their music only beeing streamed, but again this does not come with 3G, so they might have to resort to offline music and then where is the storage.
I think it would have been wiser of Google to have made models with 3G built in, if they really want us to use cloud services, there shouldn't have been a wifi-only model at all, rather adding calling cpabilities and for some making it both a tablet and phone replacement, to make sure most of these would have a dataplan inside.
I really think they should have put a camera on the back as well, with auto-focus and at least 720p resolution.
The price wouldn't have been that much higher, and it would have made it the clear choice for most looking for a tablet, and really it would came out on top of the iPad in the value for money game, despite lower build quality and the screen resolution.

With the bigger screen its quite possible to use "plit screen" views, that makes apps much easier to use.
So its clearly a downside with android, it has little or nothing to do with apps missing, it has all to do with them not taking advantage of the bigger screens.
I dont like apple, and I dont want an iPad, at least not to use as a tablet, perhaps as a midi-controller/synth, as it has some good software for that, and the core-midi support. But for sirfing the web, taking notes and the rest its Android or Win 8 pro/Win 8 RT for me. I'll probably buy the Note 10.1

Every gadget I buy I look at how much fun I can have with it. The N7 is the best of all worlds and therefore bests everthing. Perfect size, power, os, and price. This has raised the bar.

This tablet is superb. Gorgeous screen. Amazing power. Connect a PS3 or Xbox controller and you have the perfect portable console. The graphics have to be seen to be believed. Jellybean is like silk. Rooted mine in 10 minutes and can now connect up memory sticks. This thing is just so customizable. My S2 and Mac Air 11 are used far less. The N7 is just so good, it could easily cost twice as much, but the good news is, it doesn't.

the only good thing about buying this is apps.. so its a toy!!!
for cheap android tab.. i think samsung make it better... but USB port on cheaply made andriod is a need...
but i think... compare to BlackBerry PlayBook... PB is way better... 2 cameras... lots of memory.... only donside is apps.. but as long as it keeps me happy.. i will love PlayBook forever!!!

thid is really stuid to use a tablet for taking photos!
plus you are paying only half of what u should really pay for nexus 7, all those that complain about nexus 7 are affraid of the changes, they better keep up, its happening!

had this 3G, it would've been the best of all. :( I know all abt hotspot but i also know all abt small smartphone batteries.
