Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 review: Second time lucky

17 August 2012
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 is a tablet like no other but instead of making a big splash it's busy making up for lost time. With its launch pushed back shortly after the unveiling, Samsung's top-of-the-line tablet returns to a market that isn’t...

The reviewer, just like Apple appear to live a bit in the past. Microsoft and Samsung are taking the tablet to the next level where it should be. So instead of racking up screen resolution and making it just a bit more beautiful photo frame, Samsung and Microsoft have gone for productivity and creativity. Pop-up screen, split screen, and real multi-tasking, s Pen, and processing power to match. - all those count a lot more than a million screen pixels.

I don't know who goes about making films with his tablet. I had mine for a year and never once filmed with it. So the iPad 3 is packed with gimmicks that did nothing to progress the tablet as a serious device.

So, I'm getting the Note and with 3G

I had iPad2 for a whole year and never once filmed a video with it. So why should I bother whether it's 720 or 1080. The difference in screen resolution is overhyped. Performance is everything at this level.

You get bored very easily with just looking at screen and reading stuff. let's hope the S Pen can inject some fun into a class of device that is becoming an expensive digital photo frame.

Note Samsung has started to promote their new win 8 tablet. is this the start of the end for Android. Not quite, but I would certainly want to see what win 8 can really do before buying anything. Good for Samsung.

After the system restore completed, I decided not to install Samsung's product update. I have not had the problem since the system was restored. I guess Samsung needs to test there updates better.

Well, I got mine the other day. I've already got a problem with it. When the galaxy note goes into standby mode, you cannot get back in. I put the password protect option on, the standby went on after 5 minutes of no use. I get the screen with the password box on it, however the box doesn't allow me to type the password in. I have to shut down the tablet to get it to start back up. I've tried other security options, however they all work the same way. It's driving me nuts..........

Whatever you trolls said. I didn't regret selling iPad3 and went for note 10.1. Functionality, freedom and creativity are far better for the same price. I am loving it.

Yes, Note 10.1 is too expensive! The 2 Gb ram and front facing speakers are the only good things about Note 10.1! Why no NFC when users probably have S3 with NFC?
Mini apps: "This idea, and even the execution, is great, the problem is all these apps suck. Most of this is just useless. A clock app with no timer or stopwatch, an email app that can't look at emails, a redundant music app that takes up half the screen, a note app that doesn't respect data - this isn't well thought out"
(Pop up play is not as good as "SuperVideo, Floating & Popup", because that can even stream youtube videos in a pop up resizeable window!)
Split screen: "The reason this is so slow is because the two apps aren't actually running in the foreground together. Samsung doesn't have the technical ability to actually make this work, so they used a bunch of tricks to make it seem like two apps are running at once, when really one app is "on" at any given moment", so this is not real "split screen"!
Even on my S3 the "low battery" warning pop up already at 15 procent, that is too early with still a lot of battery left!

"Stock Android is so good now, messing with it is like getting a fully-cooked meal from a famous, 5 star chef, and then smothering it with ketchup"
"The hardware is pure, unadulterated garbage. The build quality is so bad, I think it gave me cancer. Samsung gave us last year's display tech and saved their best tablet screen for Apple"
"This tablet is bad at any price point, but, somehow, Samsung found the courage to charge five hundred dollars for it"
Samsung make aluminum alloy called Duralumin for Series 9 laptop and they make the iPad display, so why not use these on their Samsung top tablets, and phones?

I have often wanted to be able to disconnect the screen from my laptop, and it is often more userfriendly to use a touch-screen than the touchpad! The camera on tablets are very useful because the big screen and a pen is perfect for editing pictures, and the tablet can use the keyboard dock when taking stable pictures or videos! Children love to be interactive on a tablet touchscreen, so tablets schould replace most textbooks i schools! With a tablet you can carry around an entire library of books, and it have a more readable big screen than a phone, and you can use it to read in bed and that is not possible with a laptop with none removeable keyboard!

Was itching to finally get a decent tablet with pen input but will probably skip this as the reviews have been lukewarm at best. Hopefully Microsoft Surface Pro will deliver decent pen input with HD resolution.

                                - pop up play (YES, use the player "SuperVideo, Floating & Popup" from Google Play on any android!
                                - smart stay (why, I never use it on my S3?)
                                - mini app (? what is that?)
                                - slit screen (could probably be fixed with a software update, but it is not too difficult to jump between open fullscreen apps)
                                - pin input (? what is that?)
                                - 2 Gb ram (Ok Note have more ram)
                                - 32 or 64 Gb sd-card (YES it has a micro sd-card slot that can use even 64 Gb if FAT32!)
                                - better stereo speaker (speakers are bad on any tablet, use headphones or external speakers!)
                                - touchWiz (almost stock Android is better and faster easier updates)
                                - Samsung dedicated apps (there are many better and free alternatives on Google Play)
                                - 1280x800 (YES, the same)
                                - phonecalls (who use tablet for phonecalls and why pay for mms when you have e-mail? but sms is available on both!)
                                - audio and video codecs (free on Google Play)
                                - N8000 better quality (ASUS is not bad quality but it is a lot more value for money because you get an excellent keyboard dock including an exended battery for the same, or less, money as a Note 10.1!)
                                - ir port (have you ever used that?)
