Nokia N80 review: Jack of all trades

17 May 2006
N80, one of the latest Nokia handsets, hit the market about 20 days ago and surely it made some big waves along the way. The phone comes in a place of very high class business phones with bunch of features and extras. It features a very good 3 megapixel camera, a hi-resolution display, a miniSD card slot, a FM radio and all this is backed up by advanced connectivity technologies such as quad-band GSM, 3G UMTS, EDGE, and Wi-Fi.

It says it has Wi-Fi and 802.11g wireless.... Does that mean that I can use my phone thru my wireless internet running thru my house? If so, they just sold me on this phone, no doubt.
Thanks,
Matt

Had this phone for about a week now, and I have to say after never owning a Nokia phone before I now know what I have been missing. I've owned SE, Motorola and Samsung phones before and each one has had it's merits but this Nokia beauty has everything. From an excellent camera, not perfect but remember its a phone not a camera, superb mp3 playback, amazing screen, loadsa of features and a great design. I would recommend this phone to anybody, my friend has just got his SE k800 and I admit the camera is slightly better, but unless you put the photo under a microscope or take pictures facing a very bright light you couldn't tell the difference, and the video playback in the N80 is much better. After having seen both phones together my mate has sent his back and asked for the N80. The SE phones are stuck in a rut with design and althought the N80 is heavier and thicker it is designed perfectly and feels like a solid phone.
If you want a great phone with almost no cons at all then go for the N80. The battery life is bad to start with, but when you are checking it out for the first time it is going to be bad, when in normal use its as good as any 3g phone. Go buy it you won't be dissappointed.

Liviu, that is DEFINATELY an LED not a light sensor. Its there to tell the phone is still on when the screen goes blank in standby mode.

Have you with N80 got any firmware updates to phone?

You can check the firmware version by entering *#0000#

            My N80 firmware version is V 3.0614.0.3 11-04-2006 RM-92

Do you have newer and do you know any real improvments in them?

            My greatest concerns are
            - new browser telling too often that there's not enough memory, thoug there's plenty of it free - seems to be some kinda bad feature / bug
            - bad video resolution (aguess due to poor mpeg4-encoding)

"The front part of the phone is made of silver plastic with a metal plate on it. The plastic accommodates the N80 sign and a tiny LED." from the review.... that is NOT a LED, it's a light sensor to adjust display brightness automatically, the gsmarena guys should have known that, in fact it is present on many other nokia phones such as 6680 or N70.

i got my Nokia N80 from a week ago , and its workin very good with me and would recommand any1 to get it cuz it is great.

the 3 mp of the cam. is awesome i use my n80 to get pictures instead of my digital camera.

its not that big in size , which is cool.

but the 2 bad things that :

1-to lock the keypad u have to flip it and then close cuz wen u do that it will ask u "lock keypad ?" so u press yes.

2- in ur gallery (images and videoz) u dont make folder but u make albums , that make no problem but the problem is when u put a picture in the album it also remains in the gallery so u have 2 of them one in the gallery in "images and videos" and the other in da album so it take twice its size , and if u delete it from the gallery in "images and videoz (its normal place)" it will be also deleted from the album . so u will find all ur pics mixed toghther which sucks.

                ----------------

but on the other hand it a great cell phone with a gr8 cam and features . my friend got Nokia N91 but we both agreed that Nokia N80 is much way better than it , trust me get that phone .

Bravo Nokia! Putting up a brave fight to the kings of multimedia phones Sony Ericsson. Phone seems good...BUT
                  1. Looks like a 6680
                  2. Internal memory is a joke
                  3. Bulky..sorry i meant Brick
                  4. Phone doesn't look appealing

Back to comparing N80 to K800..Do u guys really think that SE K800 is the best the company is capable of coming out with?
Remember, Sony Ericsson's entry level 'Cyber-Shot' phone is K800.
So can u imagine what the next SE Cyber-Shot phone will be like?

In other words, Nokia's best multimedia phone to date is only equivalent to Sony Ericsson's Cyber-Shot entry level phone K800.
Sorry Nokia. SE wins in this case hands down.

this is gonna be a funny comment coz it's gonna lack a main direction..but whatever! i've had my N90 for like almost 3 months, and i'm tired of it coz now it almost always hangs/resets/shows MEMORY FULL after ending a call or after taking a photo after that time when i dropped the stupid brick on some rocks before I went snowboarding, so like yeah IT'S BROKEN!! anyway i never bothered to get it fixed so i gave it to my mom, and i don't even know if she's figured out how to use it-- oh well.. but moving on, i got the urge of researching about the latest phones to replace my N90 - my choices were the N70, N71, N72, E70 and finally the SE k800i. i had a long and hard time comparing these phones and trying to solve my dilemma of picking the best/most or near-practical phone for me. and guess what--i ended up buying the N80. so yeah, it's perfect for me. THE END!

I know the NOKIA will do something about the battery. For those who are complaining regarding their battery life, you can always buy an extra battery for that. Anyway this is just my personal opinion. Im planning to get the N80 next week. =Pinoy Pride=

I'm interested to buy one of these phones but would like to know abou the radio.
The reveiw say it lacks RDS - what is RDS?
Does this model require the Nokia headet to pluged in to operate the radio?
                            Any help appreciated, thanks

                              Hi
Its just been a couple of days of my N80 usage.
Ok! its paradigm shift for me cause I was using a Nokia 1100 before. For me the phone is amzing.
                              Whats the beauty?
                              Autdio clarity: Amazing!
Display and graphics: Well I feel I am working on a Simputer. Its cool!
The slide up feature: Its cool! its makes u feel good.
Plus all the other extra stuff!

                              Disadvantages:
                              i) Automatic Keypad Lock! I havent seen any option to enable that! and this sucks big time!
ii) I am scared to keep the phone on hard surface with the fear of lens being damaged.
iii) Camera: Pics and Video look great on the phone. but when on the comp! Yeeeks!
iv) Battery Usuage: I am not sure! I listen to songs a lot. Guess its enough for a day!
                              v) I am not able to find some cover (lamination for the same).
vi) The navigator tab...looks fragile! I do mess up sometimes!

But with all these small problems..i still love the phone!
                              Regards
                              Bageera

Just got my N80 yesterday and i have to say some of your review comments are wrong,

my keypad can be set to lock automatically when the slider is shut.

The phone slides up well past the top row of numbers and they are easily reachable.

they might have just changed things like this after recieving bad feedback, also, the battery life is 100x better than my k750i was and i haven't found a single fault for it yet.

                                    very impressed

I just received the N80 today and first views are quite favourable. I don't see the problem with the lock - when the two halves slide together you're asked if you want to lock the keys and just hit the left softkey to do so. What is so hard about that?
I have had the phone on since 9.30 this morning. It is almost 11.00 and the battery marker is stil on full. I have been playing around with the functions, made a few calls and a few texts and found the signal to be very stable. It is just a shame the camera lens isn't covered.

i made the decision to move back to nokia from SE and SS after having the 6680 a few years back.

the phone was great, just too slow and kept crashing.

after seeing the difference in the video in my SE k750 and the n70, i just had to have the n80, if this had the carl zeiss lens it would be the ultimate phone imo
