Well.... whoever has written this post..... good one... and the thanks for the history part specially.
But i would only say that SMARTPHONES cannot touch LAPTOPS seriously because of multiple reasons which u have not stated here.
1. GPU performance. seriously, MALI,POWERVR cant stand against NVidia Geforce or AMD Radeon Graphics. The total core performance of these is very very high
2. SGS 4 is the top end phone among phones. Please do select the similar for laptops, like a ALIENWARE, BENCHMARKS will vary
3. Laptops have not grown more than smartphones, but dont you think smartphones are once again trying to become laptops by increasing screen sizes daily? (AM SAYING THIS CAUSE I DONT PERSONALLY LIKE THAT AND I ALSO VOTED FOR THE SAME IN YOUR REQUEST TO MANUFACTURERS)
4. And finally. the total peripheral connectivity, the large database of apps and the use of mouse, people like me will never let go....(TRY PLAYING FIFA 13 on SGS4 or a MULTIPLAYER SESSION OF NFS MOST WANTED)
A laptop was never meant to be a phone, it was merely a small but similarly powered DESKTOP, so thats about it.
In the coming years, smartphones will defeat laptops but the way screen sizes are increasing, i dont thing the end product will be a smartphone anymore...
BUT A LAPTOP WITH A SIM CARD SLOT,A MICRO SD SLOT AND ANDROID X.0

Here is a low power core i7 vs Exynos Octa crunched by numbers:
http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1944244
http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/1935926
Intel's chip advantage is obviously biggest in memory performance.
Still, it's pretty amazing how much of a performer the Exynos is, taking all in consideration.
When Note 3 comes out with 2Ghz and new 13Gb/s DDR3 memory.. I think we could see a 5000 points result in a phone.
And the Note 4?
It should be at least as powerful as the current top of the line MacBook pro.
Think i'm crazy?
Well, think 3Ghz Octacore 14nm 64 bit Cortex A50 based chip with 4gb DDR4 RAM then

I agree with some of the comments on here.
A mid range laptop these days can do SO much more than a smartphone. A better comparison would be Laptop vs Tablet.
But it's true that a lot of people hardly use their PC's anymore, let alone a laptop because they can access the internet on a phone.
These people are likely to have never read GSM Arena however.

Really it is an interesting point
and the best sentence from this topic is "two products are completing each other than actually competing".
because some times when I surf the internet or watching videos or playing games I use my mobile, while the laptop is used for doing my work and playing high graphic games and of course the most important thing is that windows can handle a lot of useful application that isn't found elsewhere.

This argument has some validity but at a basic level is flawed.
First lets point out the obvious. This is a comparison of smartphones against Laptops, not against Desktops. Desktops have very little to none mobility. They do however share most characteristics with a laptop based on what they can output (achieve). Many points that have been raised conflict against both laptops AND desktops.
Most of the benefits of a laptop over a desktop have been adopted by smartphones, such as web browsing, social networking on the go and viewing media. This makes owning a laptop for a basic day to day computer user impractical and I believe, the cause some of the falling laptop sales.
Anyway lets look at some of the arguments:
• GHz of smartphones catching laptops.
- Some have mentioned that the GHz of phones are pretty much close to that of laptops. This is true, though has little to do with performance comparisons. You cannot compare the clock speed of processors from two different models and types. Just look-up the Megahertz Myth.
- The CPU/GPU's that are used in smartphones cant push the same performance as a mainstream laptop I'm afraid, not yet anyway. The power requirements is too demanding for a smartphone.
• The battery on smartphones last longer.
- Again you cant really compare the two. Laptops usually power a lot more than a smartphone. Laptops have much bigger screens, a full keyboard, cooling system, more intense OS, optical drive, hard drive etc... the list goes on. If a smartphone internals were to be wired up to all the extras in a laptop it would most likely be depleted in a matter of minutes, not hours. It would be questionable whether it would actually be able to turn on.
• I can do everything on my smartphone that I can on my laptop.
- I defiantly could not do everything on a smartphone that I can on a laptop, especially my job (Senior Software Engineer). Yes it can help me by letting me check emails, but when it comes down to it, my productivity crawls if I even try to work on my smartphone + keyboard (keyboard does help). There are many others like me who cant achieve the same level results from using just a smartphone.
- The performance requirements of many laptop applications mean it cannot run on a smartphone. Or if it could it would be too slow.
- Fingers are just not accurate enough in some cases... enough said.
Laptops will always be required for the productivity and performance they provide on a mobile platform but as for a laptops use in our day to day social activities, smartphones win in my book.

1st impression:gsmarena are drunk.
Lappys and smartphones/tablets can't be alternatives of each other.smartphones and tablets have improved processing power to match that of laptops.but when it comes 2 actual computing,smartphones/tablets aren't up to the mark.for instance:i as an student always wondered to have all things on a single screen(thanks to ms for taking initiative),an android or ios tablet won't let u run a programming language like java on blue j(say).
After reading-gsmarena have dived a bit forward of times.the title'smartphones vs laptops' would have made sense 2-3 years later or to be precise, when we would be able 2 play a 'cal of duty:black ops',the fully blown xbox***/ps* version.but the message is clear-laptops need to improve when it comes to 1080p,features like smart stay, smart pause.e.t.c
i would love a 1080 p surface2/3 that could run windows 8 and legacy windows apps that arent available in windows 8 store as of now.and yes Surface is where the laptops ,yes laptops, start improving.

I didn't like this comparison...
Why have you used Windows High Performance energy profile when the S4 certainly have a balanced energy profile enabled on it by default by the OS? Windows default it Balanced power profile too...
Also you could have compared real-world tasks so we'd know if we can expect notebooks to really vanish?
And why comparing the speakers to S4 when HTC One has the two much better specialized frontal speakers?

AnonD-23624, 11 May 2013Something fishy about this comparison...
What are the spec... moreDo you realize how bad you're making your self look??
Do your own geekbench research if this sounds "fishy" to you
It's all there!
Every single CPU ability measured and published.
The fact is ARM chips are that powerful.
Wake up already and accept that, you prejudiced blindfolded pc cavemen!
The Cortex A50 will be world's most advanced CPU, slated for smartphones but also all the way up to SERVERS,(AMD licensed it) and will likely give the Xeon a kicking. Because it will pack 4-5 times as much cores on the same die size and wattage, yet for a cheaper price.
What makes for the most advanced core?
It's not the end number of FLOPS and MIPS.
It is a processing ability with a certain power level.
And in that regard, this Exynos Octa is the highest tech one can buy right now.
In processing per watt comparison, the core i5 is trash

There is no smart phone on the market today or likely in the next decade, that will replace a laptop for actual full resources at your disposal. All the hype on S4 and other mobiles is just that, hype. When you actual see what they can do they are severely limited not the least because of hardware far exceeding software development. Dont rant on about apps. The vast majority are terrible. So what are so called smart phones. Decent cameras now, decent screens, GPS, fast enough for the net, some even have good sound and play vids. Oh and for the morons they play games. That is all they really do so there has been no new areas of significant development, apart from bloatware, for essentially years. It has been evolutionary, not revolutionary.
