Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

26 June 2006
Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

I have had the k800i for only a day now, and i have to admit sony ericssson has taken the camera phone to the whole new level. As for the nokia fans who think the nokia fairy will kiss them goodnight because they bash every other product. Grow up, and eat your heart out. This is an awesome phone even if you have no lives. I think I see the nokia fairy and he has the k800i in hand.

I am in between whether to buy W810! or K800!
today I went to the SE shop here in Dubai and K800i really impressed me. but.... heard k800 does not have 'mega base' function as W810i. if I buy K800, will lacking mega base be a disadvantage or not? please let me know.

                  To Greg,

on the imaging aspect, the main advantage of K800 over N73 is its xenon flash implenented in digicams. N73 still uses the LED type.

                  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I think the K800's real competition will be the n73. They're both so similar in specs and size. The n93 will appeal to a different audience, the ones who don't mind have a huge and bulky phone. I myself am still deciding between the n73 and the K800. I'm just a little worried that the n73 will have a slow interface and weak battery, which are the two things SE phones have always managed to avoid.

                    To bong,

i think, SE releases an update one year after the release of previous generation. (K700, K50, K800)

Just an opinion though. Still up SE company :)

                    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

What are the chances that SE will release a better phone than the K800 in a few months? I have a feeling that the other phone companies will soon release new phones with superior cameras (4mp+) and such, then SE will have to match those with a K850 or something like that. The 1.3mp generation lasted long, and the 2mp generation did well enough, but the 3mp set might be skipped over easily.

                      To Babdi
                      K790/k800 is using a different battery than k750. The K800 uses bst33 while k750 uses bst36

Charger and headset are compatible though

                      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I had asked if it is possible to use K750i battery in K790i. Also if we can use the headset & the charger of 750i with 790i.

If someone is sure about it please post the same in this forum.

Again if it is cnot compatible let us know why

                        To Raks,

k800 can store up to 1000 SMS messages. you will be warned if the capacity already reaches 95% thru screen pop-up.

                              hi there,

i'm using (for now) k750 which i bought after long days spent reading reviews and posts on major sites. I have to say that it wuz the best choice, cause besides the camera and a 512m card and great connectivity...etc it has very good battery life (6-7 days in stand-by), which is very important for a handy.

I mean, i think a phone with supperb integrated technologies (wi-fi...etc) but with a battery life of just 1-2 days (eg: n-series) is just useless, and besides, i'm using my laptop for that :)

SO, i'm looking forward to swap the k750 with a k800! Bye, all

Why? Because its not only about videocall but also about faster internet (48kB/s - 384 kbit/s). If you have unlimited data plan than its important for you.

Even though I prefer the SE K800 for it's design I don't care wether tne nokia n93 has better features. If it has a mp3 player, a radio, a memory expansion slot and takes decsent pictures and videos I decide on style and price. That's why I will wait for the SE k790 to become available wich will probably be cheaper because of the lack of secondary camera for video calling. Who actually uses video calling? I mean most my friend's mobiles don't even have a secondary camera, why spend more to buy a mobile that look exactly the same and just has an extra camera (I am talking about the SE K800 and K790)

Sorry for the stupid question but could anyone tell me whether it's possible with a firmware upgrade in future to reach CIF video recording on K800?

I just bought k800. It´s a great phone. Nokias N93 is not comparable to k800. They are totally different phones. And look just at the price tags. K800 costs here in Finland 438 Euros. N93 costs 730 euros. See the difference...
