Sony Ericsson K800 review: Digicam in disguise

26 June 2006
Sony Ericsson K800 is one of the handsets we were so anxious to test that we could hardly wait for the phone to be brought in the office. Its highly advertised Cyber-shot camera made us as restless as kids on Christmas morning. Once we got it and before we started working on this review we spent a good deal of time experimenting with the exciting 3.2 megapixel camera. Not that we haven't seen a better camera, no! The thing is that this good camera just happens to be a good mobile phone, too.

n93 is useless at night, at least k800 is capable of taking DECENT pictures at night...

      I'm mostly interested in the sound quality. Can I buy the K800 or should I buy the W810i with MegaBass then?

        No doubt both phones are good. The flash is impressive on the K790/K800 but it is not as impressive as the recording feature on the N93. Look on mobilereview how the colours come out on the N93. I am talking about the pictures with the cup on the table. SE used to have this advantage over Nokia. But if u really wanna talk about camera phone check out the latest 4MP Nec and the 10MP Samsung ;). I think some fanatics would say that the K800 takes better pictures than the 10 MP Samsung cos it has a XENON Flash. Get real guys, NOKIA developed a device better than any SE on the market. I admit, its big, but I will buy it. Mostly cos it records like a camcorder. K800 records like a cheap camera phone.

          Dude I have seen the comparison at mobile review... The Image quality of both K800 and N93 was same... The contrast of N93 was more than K800 (different people would have diffrent choice here as K800 low contast shows slightly better proffesional photos whereas in N93 some areas are over exposed but the contrast is good)... In some pics K800 has better color reproduction and in some N93... The N93 has 3x optical zoom and K800 has Xenon flash light...

          So what I see here is that both phones are on par and a better review from the latest firmware needs to be done...

            There is no flash test as at the moment there is no compitition with the K800's Xenon flash...

            When K750 can play full screen video then this should too...

            I have read K800 review on mobile review and gsmarena and in non of those reviews it was mentioned that sms or contacts could be saved on memoery card... In the review on gsmarena its mentioned that only e-mails can be saved on memory card and not sms... Thats why I assumed that conatcts and sms cannot be saved on memory card... It someone has it plz let me know

              http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-n93-cam-en.shtml

              Left click on this link. Camera review for N93.

              "Nokia N93 - 3.2 MP camera possibilities"

              So it’s obvious that the camera itself originates from the range of low-end digital cameras, and therefore should overcome them quality-wise. Nonetheless, let us familiarize you with a short spec list:

              * Carl Zeiss Optics: Vario-Tessar glass lens
              * Matrix, 4.5х5.5 мм, CMOS, 3.2 megapixel (2048x1536)
              * Shutter speed: Mechanical shutter: 1/2400~1/3 s
              * Macro focus distance 30 cm (macro @ Wide) 10 cm (macro @ Middle to Tele)
              * Focus range 10 cm ~ infinity
              * Focal length 4.5 mm (Wide) /12.4 mm (Tele) 34.25 - 94.1 mm(35mm equiv.)
              * Still image file format: JPEG/EXIF
              * Auto focus
              * White balance: automatic, sunny, cloudy, incandescent, fluorescent
              * Exposure compensation: +1 ~ -1EV at 0.5 step
              * Scene: automatic, user, close-up, landscape, night, night portray
              * Color tone: normal, sepia, black & white, negative
              * Zoom (optical/digital) 3x / up to 20x

              It’s not hard to see that Nokia N93 camera quality is a lot better than one installed in Nokia N80, and by some aspects better than in Sony Ericsson K790i. More details, brighter photos, sharpness. All this became possible with help of standard camera module, instead of mobile one. Camera in Nokia N93 overcomes any existing camera installed in mobile phone to date.

              You can see the pictures on that website that pics at night with the K790 are not as good as the ones with the N93.

                  n93, the link you listed didn't go anywhere. Post the link so we can see for ourselves. And better quality or not, n93's weak flash is nothing compared to k800's xenon. Also, who wants a phone that weighs 180 grams and is a foot long when unflipped? If I want a laptop i'll buy one. As for me, k790 is a sure buy. Anyone have any idea when and where I can pick up a k790?

                        Interesting phone however, SE neglected one aspect. The camera. SE is well known for their cameras but this one lacks quality when compared to N93. SE needs to take out another phone in order to compete with N93. Size/performance is great on this phone. Video recording is useless and camera wise, the difference between K750i and this one is very small. If anyone doubts N93 camera capabilities, search gsmarena: N93 and read the review i posted.

                          Does this phone play videos on full screen or not , If no then this phone is a mistake by SE , If yes then this is amazing piece of creativity and i am surely gonna buy this one
                          Any one who knows it pls help me ?, i am too consious on that part.

                                A nice review but why did they gave a review with a test version, could have waited for few days and given the review on the final thing... Also the review is more in comparison to K750??? Except the Wifi thing, I dont have any complaints other minor disadvantages mentioned in the review... But why does the music player not have Mega Bass, the K750 has it... Also I was expecting the phone to be capable of saving the contacts and sms on memory card which is not so... Badluck...

                                  Great review! The K800i sounds like another great phone from Sony Ericsson. I'll be looking forward to the K790a myself, which is nearly the same thing, but has EDGE instead of 3G.

                                    god dang that phone is fugly!! Both the front and the back (in particular the silly hunch back design.. ). pics are good of course.. but then again, I personally don't buy a phone primarily on the camera quality basis.
