Nokia E70 review: Folding typewriter

10 July 2006
Nokia has released another handset based on the 3rd edition of Series 60 user interface. This phone runs on Symbian 9.1 as the other new smartphones from the Finnish manufacturer. With its interesting design solutions and great features, it surely aims for lots of fans and will be a huge success. With its 2 megapixel camera, folding QWERTY keyboard and great connectivity features like WiFi, Nokia E70 is more than just a business phone; it is a dream phone.

I loved operating my E70. It has been really very close to my heart. But now it started having problems as hanging out for quite some time. I am interested to know if it can be updated with available latest software if any? I am not sure if this is the fair query to be inquired at this page. I will appreciate if could be responded.
    Best regards,

Despite its size (and looks when closed) and some minor drawback, E70 is the best smartphone i've ever use. Brilliant display (not the brightest but the ultra high resolution is just awesome) Fantastic qwerty keyboard. Very good built quality. Superb functionality. Organizer function need some improvement though, lack of more options and customization. Voice recorder limited to 1 minute only is rather annoying.
The only 'fatal' problem (after 1 year of usage) is the joystick that fail to function properly (eg. can't move to left/right, or when you move down, it 'inteprets' as press instead)
Contact nokia or service but they said don't have the sparepart for this problem, and don't know when this'll be available.
meanwhile i'm still using it, managed to make do with the joystick.
For my next phone, I'll choose phones with D-pad instead of joysticks (they will wear out in time no matter how gentle you use them)
anyway, i still love E70 (for there would be no room for D-pad to use in portrait/landscape mode for such a small phone with great functional keyboard)

Has anyne experiened soemthing weird? When I send a message my E70 has just started swithcing down and asking me to "INSERT SIM CARD". I open it all up, reinsert the SIM card, and then it works again , until I send the next message! Mystified - everything else works brilliantly.

first i'd like to thanks to gsmarena for its review. just yesterday, i had confidence to advise my friend for getting this nokia e70 to replace his blackberry 7290 & SE K610i to support his mobility with his works. the features can be optimized & won't be wasteful at all. love the display, sound quality, qwerty keyboard and UI. Finally my friend bought it consider for its unlimited phonebook & messages memory. bravo nokia E70...

I am amazed that the review forgot to describe the sound quality of the phone. Isn't a phone used primarily to place and receive calls? Voice quality is important for a mobile phone. For instance I just returned a blackberry pearl. I loved all the features but my wife's voice sounded so bad, with a cheap loudspeaker saturating easily...

SonyEricsson always make a great Symbian Phone. I think this E70 fall in same category as Sonyericsson M600i, Which one better? M600i got touchscreen and better 3D support, UIQ3.0 also look more impressive...
                  Which one better?

Hello there, this E70 is has best features but is not backed up the battery which lasts more than 2 days!!!!!. If you all the features like blue tooth, ppt, word etc, battery life is less than 14-18hrs. Nokia replaced a phone but even the second one is having the same problem. If you are planning to buy, I suggest you to wait for few more weeks till a enhanced version is released. Any more details, feel free to send a mail!

My months of research has finally paid off. It was a decison btw n80 and e70.This e70 is the best phone buy i've made so far. Lets start with construction and buildwise. Its really solidly built, an example would be its back cover over the battery pack. Its much better than the nokia 3230. The fold out keyboard is fantastic. Next, one of the more compelling feature that prompted me to buy this phone. Its battery life is phenomenal. 1150 mah compared to those of the n80, which is 820 mah. N80 slider may look cool but when you take it out of your pocket it will auto answer your calls as the slider has been moved slightly. Next, camera is good as its acceptable for convenient snapshots.video is good but only to be used for viewing in the phone. Wifi is fantastic, web on the go everywhere. Seems like the ambient light sensor works really well, switching off the keyboard or keypad lights when its day. This conserves alot of battery than you think. Bluetooth is seamless with my sets and syncing with my laptop. I've been using this for 5 days n it hung up on me once only when i was running web and office and installing a file at the same time.much better than my 3230 rate of 2 per day with the latest firmware. Other problems faced were like being unable to do a firmwarw update thru pc suite.also had to acclimatise to the full qwerty board.the software for s60v3 is easily solved by hunting hours n hours for them, managing to get emulators for gameboy, nes, snes. Dictionaries, bible software. All work perfectly. Lastly, in spite of the few really insignificant problems, the screen is the best deal of the phone. Its super high resolution allows viewing of high quality pictures, full divx movies. Accompanied by a myriad of connectivity options, its simply got to be the best option for a smartphone out there, when other 'good' phones are costing 800 over.
                      p.s: review done on e70. 10 mins.

Seems like, E70's power supply is not designed for the features it has. With Blue tooth 12 hrs,Without blue tooth 16 hrs, with active standby 16 hrs. If you start using the Word, PPT or Excel files ... you consider yourself out of reach, battery wlll die even before you leave your office. Nokia was kind enough to replace my phone once but still the problem continues.. seems like a design problem. Can anyone give me views on E61 or E50 battery life please?

Doesn't it seem odd that you can do video calls, but it has no front facing camera!!

Seems a bit daft, renders the video call functionality a bit useless unless you want someone to see you but not vice versa!

                                      May be I am unlucky.
My E70 looses battery within 8 hrs to 12 hrs of use.
I tried changing battery, but no use.
Phone becomes warmer before it dies out of battery. Its just 3 days old.
Seems like problem with phone/soft ware. IS this a common problem?
                                      Can any one help?

The New York City Nokia store debut on Saturday was phenominal!! I just talked to someone that works there and she said they sold out of the E70-2 (the 850mHZ version for North America) on grand opening day!!!!

I'm hoping it's available on nokiausa.com soon or through Cingular.....
