Sony Xperia Z1 review: Walking on water

19 September 2013
Sony’s got a plan and sticking to it – while other makers pile software feature upon feature, the Japanese focus on their historical strengths, such as beautiful, durable design, photographic excellence and display tech. That in short is...

Xperia Z Ultra did a better job with battery as it has 3000mah unit to power a 6.4“ screen of similar nature,so the display may not be the problem here and an update may possibly improve upon the battery life.
Same goes for camera as some reported it to have a good camera.
Sony promised a 4.3 update soon and it may help to achieve better perfomance.

Sony should put the display of LG g2 in their next flagship.

AnonD-43136, 20 Sep 2013And have you ever heard of the Xperia Z ultra? Lol! Note 3 ... moreWho are you laughing at? Yourself? Ok. Because the Note 3 is still a phone, it's still very compact and can fit into almost every pocket out there, it's even lighter than this Z1 with 0.7" of more display! hence is still can be compared to any phone out there. The Ultra on the other hand, is a tablet, NOT a phone nor a phablet or whatever. Its screen is simply too big, plus the thick bezels, the weight, you got the picture. Note 3 is the smartphone to beat.

At least in good light.

Note 3 and Z ultra are phablets and cant really compare to smaller devices! Anyway theyre too big for my liking! Still might get galaxy s4 when price comes down! I might even see what nexus 5 is like as it could well be a great price like previous version! Anyway surely with all the glass on Z1 it will become slippery if you get it wet!
I would rather have an average looking phone that performs well than something that looks like it should be in an art gallery and doesnt really impress! Have been a Sony fan but they lie about updates and where is the evidence of 4.3 update? My xperia T which is former flagship is on jb 4.1.2 which is only 1 update! I dont count bug fix updates as they should have got software right in the first place! I bet galaxy s4 will get android 5.0 and above while I would be doubtful if xperia Z (not z1) will even get 4.4 kitkat by q2 next year!

AnonD-107998, 20 Sep 2013for better camera review, read dpreview Rather disappointi... moreReal shame about the battery life, and the fact that Sony opted for the lower quality e-IPS display (as evident by the subpixel structure), come to think of it, that e-IPS display is probably the reason for the poor battery performance, since you can't crank quality up on that tech, without some serious battery drain.
Good, fair review but I have to agree with some other folks here and say that gsmarena missed the mark with their camera section of the review, you (gsmarena) should've really asked Sony for another device, because far as I know you were the only people who got a faulty lens (and a bit off-point but the comment by the reviewer "so much for g-lens" was a bit snarky, I respect this site and its reviews a lot, and that's because you keep it professional, unlike all the other crappy websites that think that IPS, AMOLED, SLCD aren't TFT displays). Anyway hope you guys update the camera section when you can with the (then) up-to-date firmware and a retail Z1. Still it's great to see the per-pixel detail on those shots, especially since they're in manual mode.
Also could you upload the 8MP Superior Auto shots in the photo comparison tool? Since that's how most of us plan to use the Z1 camera and Superior Auto>>Manual-mode-set-to-auto. And far as I remember, Superior Auto was also supposed to decide itself if HDR was necessary or not, did Sony change that with the Z1?

Rather disappointing battery performance, hopping for better software optimization from Sony. Still one of the best design, absolute looker :D

I don't really trust online reviewers.
Go and try yourself then you'll realize some reviewers are bias and some are paid...
Anyway Z1 is no doubt a beauty beast, but nothing is perfect right?

Considering this is a pre-release unit I would definitely give it the benefit of the doubt. Performance always improves when a device goes golden and is ready for release, that goes the same for all major smartphone making companies out there.

That is the new unofficial king of smartphones today which GSMA is about to make official in a day or two when their review is out. And its a Samsung. Well, now you know. Sorry to break this out to you, but, Samsung still rules. ;)

I guess the only reason why Sony makes this crappy software for its cameraphones is for not killing so soon their point&shoot/compact cameras...

lmfao.. camera performance doesn't even come close to rivaling that of the Lumia 1020

I also like compact phones but if I go for Note 3 it will be with an insurance of the device.Big screen and so narrow frame looks great but will be rather fragile. And please do not tell me for the LG and Samsung quality.
For the camera they wrote that some software features look old and many users decided that the camera is not good.
How many of you make a lot of panorama shots? Do you think that software of all other brands is perfect in all features when the phone is launched ?

Why built Xperia Z like body?
it just nothing special after I saw the camera comparison between Z1 S4 i5 and G2.
