Thanx gsmarena for a good review But u might have done a Better one. Xperia z1 has lot of cool camera Features like social life,Time shift mode and 3x lossless zoom. Although I dont have that device But I am using ported z1 camera on my xperia sp and I must admit those Features are impressive and most importantly photo clarity improved a lot than that of stock one. When u have mentioned all Features of note 3,why dont u put up Features of z1. And also use normal mode in z1, it is way Better than sa mode.
Some one mentioned put all photos taken without mentioning to which phone they belong to and let people rank them :-)

AnonD-115449, 14 Oct 2013i think it's too early to judge xperia z1, sony has done a ... moreWell.
The Z1 right now is the Z1, right now.
The z1 could probably improve with software updates, but we simply can not know. They have an image processor on board, if I understood the information correctly, and that could limit what updates can do. Having the same processor as the Note 3, you might first expect the same video functions, but those could be limited by the image processor.

The 1020, could also use a software update, since there are some problems that could be delt with, with improved software.

You cant ever judge a product from what you think it will be able to do down the line, thanks to the hardware inside... not untill it get those features can you factor those in.

AnonD-66349, 13 Oct 2013I did a few calculations of my own and I have to say I agre... moreI dont agree, to you usefullness grading.

Low light performance often weight higher, cause in good light, the difference is often much smaller between devices.
And a lot of people take photos indoor, with far from perfectly lighting.

And really, lowq light photos without flash should rank several of times higher than with flash.
Flash on these devices, does not reach far, so dont expect it to be very usefull for lighting up objects and persons.
And the flash, is problematic and often give you results with very unnatural colors, and not true to what you were trying to capture.
Flash also causes reflections on surfaces, so in many situations your flash ruins the picture completely.
And really, you mindset should be to use the flash as little as possible, not, I rather use it since I have it. If you can, you really should leave the flash off, even if the object is withing its flash range (but with these flash units, most of the time, things will be out of flash range, anyhow, and then you should absolutely leave the flash off)

Great comparison, lots of information. What would also benefit is another chapter to compare different shooting modes: landscape/street photography/macro/fast action/dusk/night.
A lot of the information is already here, but it is all over the place and fast action mode as well as macro are not explored at all. How fast different cameras can focus; what is the lag shot to shot(measured, not just subjective); how accurate is focus shot to shot; how accurate is automatic white balancing in different conditions; which camera performs the best in macro photography; which one is the best to shoot action photography.
This extra information would be highly appreciated.

AnonD-71586, 12 Oct 2013I do not think that it is fair contest against the lumia 10... moreI think it's very fair.
The 1020, is very much a phone first.
The reason the marketing is so focused on the camera is that windows phone had limitations, that did not allow for the latest CPU/GPU and higher resolution screens, so in terms of hardware its no better than a 920 from a year ago, except for the camera.
But even with these older components inside, its a good smartphone.
Sure, it's little thicker than 925, but it not a terrible compomise for added image quality.

Keep in mind also that the z1 it taller than it could have been and has more top bezel than it should need, because the camera module is moved away from the back of the screen to keep thickness down. It's also marketed as a camera phone, with lots of talk of it's camera performance in teh marketing material, the only difference there is the fact that teh z1 does not deliver as much.
So really, then you would have to exclude the z1 as well, due to size compromizes due to the camera.
And really, the note 3 has a slight hump on the back, ans so does the G2, should they also be excluded then.

kastana, 12 Oct 2013It doesn't make sense that the review is based on the camer... morelook arount the site, before commeting.
Each of these phones has a dedicated review.
just one slot below in the review section you will find a comparison with 3 of these devices, based on other aspects.

GSMarena would argue that all these devices are at least ok as smartphones, so the camera might add real value.

Most people would not carry professional or prosumer cameras every day, so a good smartphone camera could still be essential, even if you own a really good camera.
And most people don't bother to get digital cameras these days, and just use their phones... that does not mean they dont care about image quality at all...

But I agree that the sony, mostly is just big numbers.

AnonD-124721, 12 Oct 2013Well, let's make it simple. Premium build, average sized, e... moreHave you seen the Z1 in real life? Or have you at least read its meassurements?
                    It's certainly not average sized.

And this talk about premium build, what do you mean by that?
That the device survives drop-tests, or does not easily show scuffs, wear and tear.
Well, then Sony is no more premium than a plastic device, actuallyu less, cause it breaks more easily than a lot of plastic phones. And the Note 3 has a back cover that can be removed, so you could actually change it, if it would start to wear.
Premium material, in mobiles is mostly just a marketing trick.

Fair result of the "test" should be Lumia, Z1, Note 3, G2, iP5s! That is fine for a camera review but the best all round smartphone is still the Z1. Looks, feel, build quality it is just so "thumbable". "Test" because, I don't care for these "fixed" comparisons, it is all a matter of preference!

I did a few calculations of my own and I have to say I agree with GSMArena (for the 1st and 2nd positions) and disagree with those who said xperia z1 should've been 2nd. Mind you, I really wanted the z1 to win as it's the handset I'll most likely be purchasing.

I scored images and video separately.

I first gave 5 points in each scenario to the phone which was ranked as 1st, 4 to 2nd position and so on. Last position got no points. Next, I gave weights to the most important scenarios. I gave a weight of 10 to images in good light (as I think this is the most important), 5.5 to images in low light with flash, 2 to images in low light without flash (I would rather use flash if I have it), HDR 2 (not that important to me), Panaroma 2 (hardly use it), and camera features 1 (I really don't care about features as long as it gives me quality photos). This was just my personal way of weighing them.

After I did my calculations, the lumia 1020 scored 85.77 out of 100 and note 3 scored 60. Xperia z1 scored 48.44. To my disappointment, even the iphone 5s scored higher with 48.89. LG G2 scored 33.77 and HTC One scored 23.11.

Similarly for video, I gave a weight of 10 to good light video and 7.5 to low light video. I gave a weight of 1 to video features. Scores were lumia 1020 83.24, note 3 58.92, iphone 5s 54.05, xperia z1 47.03, HTC One 45.41 and LG G2 11.35.

I had higher hopes for the Sony.

People are whining about why the note 3 placed 2nd. Most of them pack better camera sensor and technology compared to note 3 but did not perform as how it suppose to be. Whatever it is, lumia's picture qualities are very impressive although there are few drawbacks. Give xperia z1 sensors to Samsung or Apple and see how they would have optimised it.

                                        - Good light recording: Samsung is above Sony.
                                        - Low light video recording: Sony is above Sony.

                                        Sony above Samsung = 4
                                        Samsung above Sony = 5

Now, lets forget about how much point Sony Xperia Z1 get over Samsung Galaxy Note III. So, lets see what are the phases where:

                                        Sony is superior to Samsung.
                                        - Hardware and Camera comparison.
                                        - Photo quality in low light.
                                        - Still photo quality in low light(Flash off).
                                        - Low light video recording.

                                        Samsung is superior to Sony:
                                        - HDR Mode.
                                        - Paranorma.
                                        - Still photo quality in low light(Flash on).
                                        - Video camera features.
                                        - Low light recording.

Concluding: Sony Xperia Z1 got talents at hardcore level such as low light video recording but this is just the only advantage besides hardware over Samsung while on the other hand, Samsung got huge advantages which are Paranorma, HDR, Good light video recording, low light recording and video camera. In addition to, Samsung's got an upper hand above Sony in terms of video recording in most of the levels and some excellent features like HDR and paranorma. Besides from the fact that Samsung Note III is the toughest all rounder excluding camera aspect. It gains an advantage over the 20MP G-lens sensor of Sony.

Now to your point, GMSArena, being pleased and compound word such as "extremely pleased" is something you have implemented from your side. They like the device. Why don't they? It's a very useful gadget to date. Saying "Extremely pleased" just doesn't fit here. GSMArena also used words like they "Nokia Lumia 1020 crushes the other devices", why not just before even concluding, write, Nokia Lumia 1020 is the winner no matter what happen? Sir, you are overreacting here. You are including your own favoritism here towards a specific brand. I am a Nokia Lumia 920 owner, soon will be owning 1020 but you comment is just baseless and doesn't reflect the true shadow of a sensible person. Try understanding things from different point of views. It's really helpful.

This post is also for those who got a confusion in mind about Sony Xperia Z1 is better than Samsung Galaxy Note III. Once again, I am not a Samsung fan. I just stated the fact according to this article. I hope this will be helpful for many people here.
