These phones still don't beat my 4 yr old Nokia N900, which only takes 5mp photo's and 480p video. The contrast and clarity is perfect, compared to the poor quality we have on offer from these latest phones. The Carl Zeiss Optics and Tessar Lens make such a difference to the quality of photo's and video and there is no upscaling or processing whatsoever. Audio quality is also the best, nothing can beat it, maybe manufacturers should follow the example and make thicker phones rather than follow this absurd trend towards thinner phones.

              Z1 needs a software update.

I am sure they can make use of s800 chipset and give higher framerate recording and 4k recording since note 3's 4k recording definitely improved detailing in videos captured.moreover both phones use same chipset.

              also give 60mp panaroma like note 3...(i mean c'mon 5mp panaroma from 20mp unit.....fail).

digital stabilisation on Z1 is bad....even note 3 and iphone 5s without OIS perform neck and neck to the G2 or 1020.

nice review gsmarena... as it was expected the htc one has the worst camera among the others, finally sony built a good phone camera without the horrible noise in the previous phones, for me the galaxy s3 deserves the second place because a lot of people including me are using the video camera most of the time.

i don't like large phones,if sony releases the z1 f internationally i might buy one.

i dont own a Z1 though i planned to buy 1 but i'm curious how waterproof was not even mentioned in the whole shootout? and also no mention about the live streaming directly onto FB feature? i know there's no direct comparison but it should at least be mentioned like how the Koreans have dual-shot or live effect etc?

though i like the shootout, i find it weird there's no comparison on the time between shots apart from the occasional mention about the 4 seconds lag of the 1020. i think there should be a comparison between shot-to-shot time as in real life, that's very important!

the comparison was the best i have ever read so far from GSM Arena! You guys had done very very good work i applause you for this. Now lets talk about the article. Personally i did expected to see Nokia in the first place, but at the second place i expected to see Sony because of the larger sensor and the more MP! when i saw Samsung at the second place i was a little surprised, but then i remember that Samsung had always provided very good quality of images and videos, and the rest of the places i queses them right so HTC has to stop their ultra-pixel camera and put some 13MP proper camera like Samsung and LG or improve their technology which i believe is too difficult!

In my opinion, xperia z1 should be second.because of 3xlossless zoom, taking photo/video under water, info eye, watchacall facebook live video something and also developer will be able to develop some nifty awesome feature in the future.and it got all the tool.

Considering that several of these phones of the outstanding s800 chip, it's rather disappointing the results of these tests. If manufacturers made more use of the chip and took advantage of its many capabilities we would have outstanding phones. I will certainly be waiting for next years flagships, the Z2 will also have this chip and hopefully many other manufacturers will follow so let's hope they do better.

Nice review. Could almost pass as dpreview article.
interesting that the note 3 shows superior video quality. I was surprised to see that the audio on the 1020 was somewhat dampened. Perhaps a software tweak?
Also surprised that the note 3 managed a closer zoom than the 1020 with video.

What's interesting here is to look how (un)talented software engineers some companies have because we have 3 devices based on same SoC.

And for example - when I read about Sony having the Snapdragon 800 inside, with 20 MP imaging sensor that produces 5 MP panoramas in the Z1 then I'm asking myself - what the hell? Who works at Sony software department? Samsung was able to shoot more detailed panoramas with it's Galaxy Note 2 a year ago! And Sony has bigger sensor, with more possibilities.

Also - the ability to shoot 2 MP photos while recording video in the Z1 - again, Samsung can shoot 8 MP!

This was also the case with earlier Sony flagships that had same sensors as the competition but produced worse results - Sony just can't make it right when it comes to photo processing algorithms, they need to hire some talented people. Maybe then we'll see something more than a 5 MP ridiculous panorama from them.
