Samsung announces “Unbreakable” OLED panel
Samsung Display has just announced it has developed an “Unbreakable” flexible OLED panel. The component is developed for smartphones and has been certified by UL - Underwriters Laboratories that works for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) of the US Department of Labor
It said in the press release the unbreakable display passed the real-time durability test based on military standards set by the US Department of Defense.
Hojung Kim, General Manager at Samsung Display, said “the fortified plastic window is especially suitable for smartphones […] because of its lightweight, transmissivity and hardness, which are all very similar to glass.”
The company expects to use the durable OLED panel also for automobile consoles, mobile military devices, portable game consoles and tablet PCs for learning.
The testing, done by UL, was a series of drops. The first test was 26 drops from 1.2 meters, followed by high and low temperature tests (between 71 degrees and -32 degrees Celsius). The panel continued to function normally “with no damage to its front, sides or edges.”
Later it was dropped from 1.8 meters, more than the US military ever required from its licensing companies, but the panel was still operational with no sign of damage.

The moto droid turbo 2 implementation was mostly a flat panel with 2.5 edge, Samsung exaggerates the curve for mostly aesthetics and improving ergonomics as it helps narrow the phone.
