Samsung announces "a new era of Galaxy AI", starting with AI Live Translate Call

Vlad, 09 November 2023

AI is the buzzword of the year for sure (thanks, ChatGPT!) and Samsung has decided it doesn't want to be left out of the let's AI-ify everything everywhere game. So today it's announced that "a new era of Galaxy AI is coming".

Wondering what that means? Only one example is given, and that is AI Live Translate Call, which is exactly what the name implies, at least in theory. "Soon", users "with the latest Galaxy AI phone" will have a personal translator whenever they need it. This will be integrated into the native call feature, so "the hassle of using third-party apps is gone", Samsung proudly proclaims.

Audio and text translations will appear in real-time as you speak, and this is all happening on-device, so the contents of your conversations never leave your phone. This, Samsung says, makes "calling someone who speaks another language about as simple as turning on closed captions when you stream a show". That is, of course, if it actually works as described.

Now, we've already heard that the Korean company would heavily push the AI buzzword for the launch of the upcoming Galaxy S24 series, expected to be unveiled on January 17. This is pretty much Samsung's confirmation of that fact - "latest Galaxy AI phone", anyone?

So ladies and gentlemen, get ready for "Galaxy AI". What is "Galaxy AI"? According to Samsung itself, it's "a comprehensive mobile AI experience, powered by both on-device AI developed at Samsung and cloud-based AI", the latter enabled by its "open collaborations with like-minded industry leaders".

This will "transform your everyday mobile experience with the peace of mind you count on from Galaxy security and privacy", because "no company can harness AI's potential like Galaxy" - note, "Galaxy" is a brand, not a company, but let's not get stuck on any such pesky details, right?

If you're wondering why "Galaxy" is in a unique position to "harness" all of this vague potential, it's because, get this - "only Galaxy puts the power of openness in the palm of your hand". Other phones don't exist, apparently. Or they do but can't, for whatever reason, place that power of openness in your hands. Strange.

So, "coming early next year" (there's that Galaxy S24 nod/hint again), "Galaxy AI will bring us closer to a world where some of the most common barriers to social connection dissolve, and communication is easier and more productive than ever", Samsung says, and we're wondering whether this means Bixby will get rebranded to Galaxy AI. Your guess is as good as ours right now, but we'll find out for sure in January, so buckle up for "AI changing the world and your life for the better".
