Hi geeks! Got this phone FREE on contract today and have been playing around on it all morning. Since im naused senseless at the mo, i'll write my observations about the D900 so far: (Note i'll be comparing it to my previous phone, the nokia 6680, which is *ahem* a 3G, symbian geek phone)
First things first, the box. When i ripped open the parcel bag in anticipation, the solvent-based smell that was emmitted was foul, yet strangeley pleasant. I took the D900 box out of the bag. Its a small, slimline box.
I opened the box with some difficulty, perhaps a strange case of fat-fingers induced disability. But anyway. Out the phone came.
The D900 smelt strange. Like a cross between plastic and Chinese people. But strangeley pleasant yet again. I SLAMMED my sim card in, whacked the battery in, shoved the bat case on and fired her up!!
And oh did she fire up! Right, the screen:
The QVGA screen is of a very high quality. Much better than my 6680. The colours are clean and vibrant and its very crisp to look at.
The camera. Now, i know you geeks have been arguing your pathetic and pointless lives away about the D900 camera. Well, it DOES have autofocus as well as a few other little bonuses, but ultra good photos it aint.
YES, the photos the D900 takes are good, but they arent something to write home about. NB: 3MP always will be just 'good' - if you want decent photos, buy a good digi-cam or wait for the mobs that are droppin end of 2007. Case closed. Geeks. Stop arguing. Find a girlfriend. Perhaps even kiss them. Its nice.
Phonecalls are strange cos the theme thats installed with my phone featured the House of Commons and Big 'B4astard' Ben, so when i tapped in numbers, a quirky 3D looking quilled pen wrote out the number on screen. Not good, cos it wrecked the D900's processer in half and made dialling a nause. SO it was changed to a standard 1D on screen colourful method of number display to speed the process up...
Keytones are frickin annoyin. You cant turn the volume down in-menu for keytones, you have to use the side volume button.
You get some cool games includin the original MEGA DRIVE/GENESIS Sonic 1!!
Its crap and the D900 processor, equivalent to a Commodore 64, cant handle it.
I dont like the cover caps for the charger/memory card. The charger port expecially is gonna do my head in. You have to remove the charger cover every time the phone needs a charge. The small cover is connected to the phone with piece of about 1mm transluscent cord. It seems pretty flimsy and liable to snap off at any moment, which in a months time it probably will... Thats two pieces of sh*t about it then: a) the fact you have to remove it every charge b) the fact it probably will snap off, which will in fact solve problem 'a)' but then cause problem c) the phone will end up looking tacky/over used, which will damage potential resale price which i like doing at the end of my 12 month contract. So im screwed even before the phone has been 'used' properly.
The slide function is nice and smooth. Stop b*tchin about it - its nice (tho this is my first ever slide phone so i have nothin to compare it too).
Build quality is very good, hole covers aside.. Because the phone is so slimline and compact, one drop of this phone will probably crack the screen and/or break something. At least with a horrible looking bulky and ugly nokia, they are usually that big that the case acts as a 'safety helmet' should you drop it, protecting the big, clumsy Nokia screen. Well, at least geek phones have some benefits...
Its strange going from Symbian (6680) to 'fixed' normal mobile software again. Yes, you are limited with what you can install/do on the D900 software wise, but the software that is included is very nice (music player especially, theres even a visualiser, which is cool, if not battery sucking).
The menu's are relatively easy to navigate and you can choose between black or white menu background/tiles or lists, etc etc. Limited, but useful.
Takes mini SD cards. If you're gonna put music/take lots of photos, buy one - it isnt included in the box, the skanky cu*ts.
But now something i just REALLY dont like. While this phone does everything you'd want it to, text messaging is one nasty scar on this baby. While the text feature is good, i like to use special characters in many of my texts (£ ( ) $ &) but the samsung WONT let you input them in the usual way. INSTEAD, you have to go through a long drawn out method of pressing the . key, then pressing the spell key until it lets you enter a word into the dictionary. Once in the 'Add word/dictionary screen' it is only THEN you can enter a & or pound sign, etc which is ridiculous. You cant change this either. And you cant enter these symbols without doing the above method. This is very, very sh*te and if i knew this i prob would have got the N73, purely for such a pointless screw up by Samsung. Something on my 6680 that would take 2 seconds courtesy of a special character menu, now takes a good 20-30 seconds and up to 15 key presses. I use my phone to a) call people, b) text. SO if one or both makes doing such a thing more difficult, i dont like it.
It is bearable, but it is a right pain in the ball sack. The only other sh*te thing about texting is if you spell a word that has more than one spelling in a keystroke, you cant go back to the word and change it to its alternative spelling (like on the 6680) - you have to delete the word then type it again.
My choice of new phone was either this or the N73. Being with Nokia for years, i thought change was good. I was also getting sick and tired of Nokias constant awful designs, brick, FAT phones that have about as much street cred as Charlie Dimmock, N73 included. - I mean what is with the N73's plain, boring and ridiculous waist line between the keypad and screen? It looks like a frickin NHS prescription phone. Thats why i chose the samsung, cos design wise, its cool and i knew (apart from the txt f*ck up) that it would do everything i wanted. I dont care about geeky, waste-of-life features like crappy cameras. If im taking pictures, i'll use a high quality digicam. If im recording video, i'll use a high quality digicam. If i want to play games, ill buy a console. (Do you see a pattern emerging here yet?).
Its very slim and very pocket friendly. It is quite wide though and also quite tall (length wise) considering its a slider - 102mm (10.2cm) when closed, but then thats cos of all the 'technology' crammed into this lil c*nt!! Its still a small and sleek phone however.
Anyway, thats about all i have to say about it. Im sure someone else will give better round up of the phone. If you dont like Nokias/Symbian and dont mind a long, drawn-out way of inputting special characters when texting, get this phone. IF you do, get the N73.
The phone comes with hands free/ear bud headphones and data cable.
Being a Nokia user for the past 5 years, im thinking perhaps i should have held out for it - this text thing has ruined my day and my D900 'aspirations'... Perhaps a firmware update might sort it, cos i am tempted to be just as geeky as you nerds and contact Samsung to see if they can do anything about it, which a software update i think might do it.

Why are phones so much cheaper in USA than Uk someone was'nt happy paying $479 which is about 255 GBP I paid about that for SE k750i when they first came out sim free and i think this is a much better phoen than that. If you could a get a d900 in UK 255 i would have bought one but i expect they'll be at least 300 GBP sim free

Everywhere I look, I can't seem to find the battery life for this phone? Is the battery life so bad, that Samsung refused to disclose it?

There seems to be an equal amount of people slating this handset as there are people loving it. I have my feet firmly in the latter.
It's a class looking slider and can't wait to upgrade. It's already listed as an available handset on the O2 website but after speaking with O2 I have been informed they're not due any stock til later on this week.
Not long now ...
