Anonymous, 31 Dec 2023So they made a small version of the A23 5G just for Japan b... moreFirst of all, Japan is not the world. It's a very specific market with specific demands when it comes to telephony. Just look at their history in that matter. Japan is also one the very few markets where they launched a clamshell Android smartphone with real buttons but those where premium ones. And yes, for the rest they also have the same big slabs as anywhere else as it is dictated by trends. The phone you refer to is indeed a compact phone and a budget one as well. I tried to lookup sales figures about that one but don't seem to find any. There isn't any rumor about a successor either. So I stay with the claim that such phones won't come any time soon, certainly not in the lower segments unless the trend of big is better would suddenly change to more usable sizes in terms of handling. Only here and there there might be a compact one as an attempt to see if the market is ready for that but it won't be cheap most probably.

But anyway it's not really the discussion. The main point of the post was to share an explanation done by a reviewer regarding compact phones and why there aren't that many. In short, it makes sense, the cost of making one versus the potential sales in a world where big is better in terms of screen estate makes it less likely that an abundant amount of compact devices will come any time soon, certainly not in the budget and lower midrange segments.

Anonymous, 31 Dec 2023So they made a small version of the A23 5G just for Japan b... moreIt's not Samsung's decision. Its' japanese operators' (Au, Docomo) decision that they want to sell small phones. The android market there is heavily control by operators, not phone makers.

While a modified version of the A23 5G for just one country may be one of the more extreme instances of Samsung's stupidity, many of their phones are only available in limited locations and/or select countries.
So this is a pattern with those imbeciles.

They're not asking for a iPhone mini size device. They're asking for an S23 size budget phone. The S23 sells better than the bigger S23 Plus. There are LOTS of people who's buy a mid-range phone that's the size and weight of the S23.

Anonymous, 31 Dec 2023So they made a small version of the A23 5G just for Japan b... moreIt is only a very small number of ppl that really want small phones. Apple tried to cater to all the ppl saying that they wanted small phones. Apple created the Apple Mini phones. They sold so poorly that they had to quit making them. Ppl apparently love to say they want small phones, but don't actually want them in reality. I don't understand it, myself. I like hig phones and I say I like them.

The S23 sells better than the S23 Plus.
And replicating the size of the S23 in a budget phone would be the perfect compact budget option.

That makes no sense. Plenty of people elsewhere would love it too.
Samsung's decisions on where (and when) to release which phone models are truly strange and erratic, with no rhyme or reason. It's been that way for a long time already.

Does the super AMOLED of this screen bleed when dropped or is it improved? I've experienced AMOLED phones and it would bleed just when dropped mildly

Anonymous, 29 Dec 2023You're not correct. The S23 is selling quite well actu... moreThey are selling in an acceptable way but not well, at least not as Samsung would want it to be. The main winner is the ultra, not the vanilla S23. And even the S23 isn't really a compact device in real terms. It only is compared to the massive amount of devices with huge screens. 6.1, 6.2 inches isn't especially "compact". And as you said it, the battery is off course small as it has to be a reasonably thin device as well. The better chipset allows it to have an acceptable battery performance (at least compared to the S22) but thinking at the longer run when the small battery will start to degrade then a powerbank will be your best friend much faster than with a bigger unit. That is one of the "compromises" that most buyers don't want to make apparently. The pixel 7A is also called a compact device and it is if compared with the big boys but again it's not really compact, especially in the case of this device as the housing and large bezels doesn't make it that compact and just as with the S23 the battery is on the small side (with a much worse battery performance as a result given the less efficient chipset and power management).

Anonymous, 29 Dec 2023Samsung CAN make compact budget phones if they want to. The... moreIndeed but as for other compact devices, it failed to impress sales wise. All brands are capable to make real compact phones but they don't do it as those who dared, failed at selling them. Either they were too expensive or the compromise was too big compared to the big slabs. There isn't enough demand and thus making a niche device for a niche audience isn't something they want to make. The trend is bigger is better and they all, kind off, standardized their manufacturing process to it.

Obviously the battery would be smaller too. Like the S23.
