It work well on first attempt..
But... moreI know how an optical sensor works, but this is why you should while saving your print, put your finger in different positions and poses.
Also there is a slight margin of error,lets say the scanner found 90% match,it will unlock.(Don't worry no one has 90% match of your finger)

But later people face trouble
For solution you need to understand stuff ..
A optical sensor take image and compare data and unlock your phone ..
A ULTRA SONIC Sensor send sound waves and calculate height and depth of your fingerprint rows .
And compare data and unlock ..
You can see height and depth of thumb print .
Even small changes in your thumb cause fail to recognize.
Because very small depth and height in your thumbprint ..
You can use left hand thimb unlock phone .
It work fine and fast .

How to fix?

Ive already downloaded the latest update. The scanner works like 3/10 sometimes it works but I have to try atleast 5-10 times to get a match.

Use different positions of finger that you are likely to use rather than random ones. And rotate finger, it seems that the smartphone is not enough "smart" to detect a rotation, even if same area of finger is covered. I got a bit more success after my nth attempt.

But why most of the manufacturers are still using LCD display in the low end and midrange phones?
The reasons are cost of the OLED display is much more higher compared to LCD display and SAMSUNG has control 93% of the supply chain (until 2018), almost monopoly the chain.
Manufacturers need to pay more to get the display from SAMSUNG Display.
Regarding those recording features that you mentioned, the reason why SAMSUNG not give to this device is they want you to pay more to buy a more expensive phone in order to get the features.

For better fingerprint recognition When you scan your fingerprints on the device, be aware of the following conditions that may affect the feature’s performance: •The device may not recognise fingerprints that are affected by wrinkles or scars.
•The device may not recognise fingerprints from small or thin fingers.
•To improve recognition performance, register fingerprints of the hand used most often to perform tasks on the device.
•Your device has a built-in fingerprint recognition sensor at the bottom centre of the screen. Ensure that the screen protector or the touchscreen on the fingerprint recognition sensor area is not scratched or damaged by objects, such as coins, keys, pens, and necklaces.
•Ensure that the fingerprint recognition sensor area at the bottom centre of the screen and your fingers are clean and dry.
•If you bend your finger or use a fingertip, the device may not recognise your fingerprints. Press the screen so that your fingertip spreads over the wide surface of the fingerprint recognition area.
