just compare the two with the same headset, that's what I've been saying consistently, to get to know the Phone's audio quality, not the headset's quality.
You will definitely conclude that Sony/Samsung belong to Same standard, followed by HTC/LG/Motorola.

Doing this tells u abt the actual sound coming from the chipset.
Anyways I still find MMx, Huawei,and ZTE to be supplying the worst quality of headsets, Karbonn's is a Little betr nd XOLO gives a decent pair..
After using the stock headsets, I have used Philips SHE7005 and Philips SHE3595 Headsets for all the reviews i have written here.
Both are fully compatible with all types of 4-pole 3.5mm jacks
(be it Type 1 (Common in Nokia/MMx/karbonn/xolo/Old SE, Old sammy) or Type2 (Common in new Samsung, new Sony, HTC, Apple, Motorola, LG))

Hell lot of difference between Sammy/Sony/HTC and MMX/Karbonn..
I must say again that the brands like MMx/Karbonn/Huawei/ZTE really need to improve. The fine refined quality is really missing.
What they need is just a lot of fine tuning in their DSP software.
Spent arnd an hour on trying various EQ settings but non could be satisfactory.
I can found Lava improving a lot . Got to use a Lava XOLO Q800 later this morning.. and man was really amazed to hear the sound.. Its great when u compare it with MMX/Karbonn, nearly reaching the quality parameters set by Sammy/Sony.
PS: To feel the difference u really need a good IEM. cheap one's cant tell the difference.

and even worse sound, which cant be helped even by a high-end philips headphone.
This is the reality of these Indian brands..
There is lot for them to improve on..
that is why I'm always ready to pay double for the same specs to get a Samsung or a Sony or a HTC.
Give me the quality which samsung , sony etc provide,
I'll buy Micromax, Lava or Huawei .. Quality comes 1st
I make these comments after a recent hands-on with Micromax Superfone Elite and Xolo A500, and X500(the Intel phone)
even the 3.2 mp camera of my 3 yr old Samsung Shark outperforms the 5mp beasts of Micromax, Karbonn, Xolo, and even Nokia's
