If you want to get an update directly from Google, flashed your galaxy nexus with Yakju or Takju build. Download the nexus toolkit from xda-developer and follow the guide. With this...you always get the first update release from Google.

if u dont have yakju/takju version of ur gnex just flash the stock f/w from google using galaxy nexus toolkit(jelly bean edition) simple as that then try also custom rom like xenonHD nice and fast rom with lots of goodies, been using it a week now.

I hate APPLE due to these limitations but they atleast release upgrades for all unlocked handsets. GOOGLE is even worst that not releasing update even for all unlocked phones. very POOR
