The Galaxy Note II has been launched, with so many reasons to upgrade owing to the success of the original Galaxy Note millions have been using. It still seems the market is holding out higher internal memory capacity of the Note II. With the promise of the OS of the original Note being upgraded to the official Android 4.1 (Jellybean), I'll be holding my breath to see what it can do to improve the performance and waiting for the Note II's 64GB dual-SIM slot, black version to come out. It has been a year of great performance with my Note, but this will eventually find its way to my wife's hands.
Anyway, I managed to find another great accessory for our beloved original Note. I'm always keeping an eye out for a battery pack/bank as I'm a heavy user depending on it all the time, having work it in downloading torrents a lot while out. I would now get some 4-5 hours from the original 2500 mAh battery, from the continuous internet connection and I would need to change batteries at least twice daily till I get home. I'm waiting forever for Mugen extended batteries to be available here in the Philippines! Ordering over the internet would actually be tremendously expensive.
I found a US$24 (Php1000 bargained from P1500) external power bank jacket of 3000 mAh capacity. You can see the pictures of it here:

It increases the height by 10.1mm, 4mm in width, and the thickness of the entire assembly to a total of 17mm (the Note alone is just 9.7mm). This powerbank slide-in jacket has a strong enough plastic kickstand, encloses the S Pen from being taken out, and has these 4 blue LED power capacity indicators which one can find annoying as one will be constantly be blinking! They only turn off when you turn off the powerbank, but it blinks while in use or charging! About 80% of the unit is coated with rubberized matte surface. The remaining top is made of flexible silicon or rubber material. If you think about it, it's like having the US$89 Mugen extended battery of 5400 mAh except this 3000 mAh external jacket combined with the internal original 2500 mAh battery adds up to some 5500 mAh. But hey, this external battery jacket is only less than a third of the cost! The whole assembly has a total weight of 290g (178g + 112g), which feels just ok for me. I mean of course you expect an extra weight, but just for comparison, a Galaxy Tab 7.7 with a 5100 mAh battery is about 340g and the new iPad is 662g.
Other than the flimsy kickstand, annoying blinking blue LED, slightly taller dimension and making it hard for you to take out your S Pen from the back silo (I have the S Pen holder with an extra S Pen included anyway), it should work to keep you juiced up all day long. I They were other variants of this external power jacket - all brandless from China but this was the better designed. I even saw one with the old Apple USB charging cable slot which was strange.
The bottom line is, the matte thin rubber finish of this external power bank jacket feels great on the hand and the power extension works! It gave me a good 10 hours + (combined with the original battery) of continuous heavy usage with downloading torrents, surfing, internet music, watching, with my bluetooth connected to SE LiveView watch & stereo earpiece. I solved the blinking light problem by placing minuscule pieces of black blu-tack over them as temporary solution (as it's under warranty).
Just imagine the amount of usage time with this jacket and the Jellybean OS upgrade within this year! It should nicely keep me afloat till I get the black 64GB, dual-SIM slot Galaxy Note II.
