They might #1 in volume sales in TVs and phones, but their lower end market has always been crap. Just 15 years ago circa 2002 when the cameraphone revolution began, Samsung was always second-rate to Nokias and Motorolas like Hyundais and Kias were to Toyotas and Hondas.
It is only in recent times in this decade with better marketing they copied from Apple while going for premium design is when Samsung started to become relevant as an overall brand and regarded first tier. Back then, their brand wasn't any more popular than Sanyo (Japan). Samsung was always a B-rated brand or worse.
Remove the Samsung name in their entry and midranger phones and they are really no better than Alcatel and Coby. A generic producer with a higher price tag. Where is the once mighty Panasonic with their durable products like a Toughbook when you need them? Made in Japan was usually top quality.

I regret not getting one instead I bought the galaxy a3 terrible experience and phone. Well congratulations samsung you made a proud samsung hater because of my experience with the galaxy A3. Thank samsung to let me see from experience what a terrible brand you are. : )

Not at all exciting. Camera department is no huge improvement only software upgrade. Battery is not good for power user. Time will tell

I could e biased I like that industrial design but like modern day cars they just round everything off with no design.
So most people have to wait another year for the next Galaxy. Sigh.

Yes yes sony always has the newest chipsets , cameras ect ect ect ect but the real user usage is what matters , and sony overall doesnt have a good opinion on that.
Boot time : 2x slower than iphone and S7
Camera : 19 or 21 MP yeah but these are numbers..... Did you try low light? I had a Z5 I know what i'm writing about.
Sony looks good on paper

When a manufacturer brings something useful and interesting to the table, it should be rewarded; and when a manufacturer repackages their old product with some less useful innovation, they should not be given any consideration. However, recently Apple and Samsung aren't bringing in useful and interesting (I know usefulness is a matter of perspective, but still) features like they have in the past. If they get rewarded for the brand value alone, we are not likely to get better features in future phones.
Galaxy S8 is a fantastic phone, no doubt. But experience with Samsung phone has not been sweet in the past, so many hangs and lags, and a fragile display (of course this experience was on a lower-end device, J7-2016). Comparatively, I had better experience with Z5 and Pro from Sony. So, I am also biased against Samsung and towards Sony.
One thing however, S8 is not that tall, I don't know why some are frustrated about it. May be they are users of previous phones from S series. But height seems normal for a flagship. Its a great phone, but I was hoping they would give us a phone that have a better marketing point than "bezel-less phone" (Unbox your phone).

They should come with optical zoom and bigger battery, nothing is extraordinary in this s8. They could not put their extra effort in makin' this device standout. Let's see what kinda respond s8 will get.

Don't make excuses for these greedy companies that uses planned obsolescence like a sealed battery for consumers to keep upgrading every two years.
You can even check Samsung laptops and their failure rating is high after a few years. About 2-3x higher than Apple's. Unlike the old Panasonic, Nokia, or Motorola, Samsung products have never been known for reliability and longevity.
Just remember, Samsung was always a second-rate brand below Sony just 15 years ago. South Korean products and automobiles were NOT known for quality about Y2K.

I expected more from the S8 honestly, same camera, little battery for that screen, bad fingerprint portiioning making it prettu much useless...
Yeah it has iris scanner, a neq soc...but still..qualcomm and exynos are not even close to apple soc and that not good...they barely catch up with 8 months old a10 soc...

I don't like the location of the fingerprint sensor. It should be below the camera and centered, not beside of it.
