I have just stopped using my Samsung Galaxy Y Duo because the issues were many and irresolvable.

My initial impression was very positive. A smart phone at a budget price. Easy to use and intuitive I made the move from my old Nokia 3315 then 9 years old to my first smart phone with Fscebook and Twitter (although I had to download the apps[why not included as pre-loaded software]), a basic camera and apps like GPS, music and email. I especially enjoyed reading a few books on the phone and downloaded others. I also loaded up some music of my own. I didn't like the way the music was organised and with no option organising music to my own satisfaction. For an accustomed old Nokia user like myself this was all exciting.

Slowly though issues rose up. First there was no option to share photos to Facebook and Twitter directly from the gallery. The options for sharing were for Piecza (still not sure what that was) and other obscure choices. There was no way to add to the sharing options. To share a photo with Twitter or Facebook required opening up the required app and selecting an image from gallery to add to a post.

Another problem was not really phone related as user related. The screen size was really to small for a user with middle aged eyes to meaningfully interact by a touch screen qwerty keyboard. I select the numeric keypad as the preferred option for entering text. I was used to using a numeric keypad for entering text with my Nokia 3315. Faster with fewer typos than a qwerty keyboard. As often as I tried to turn off predictive text it had a habit of turning itself on. Most annoying as "predictive" text had close to a 100 percent failure rate in predicting what I wanted to type.

The most serious problem was the minuscule system of 160 MB. That is MB not GB. The phone came with a 2 GB SD micro card and I later purchased a 32 GB card. I downloaded an app to identify all the other apps which could be transferred over to the SD micro and transferred everything which would go. However there are some apps which can not be transferred to a card and they MUST have system memory. The result was that system memory was exhausted in a short time with nothing left to transfer to the card and no apps I wanted or could delete.

The memory problem prevented text messages from being received. I could not receive any SMSes. I could not update larger apps since they would need a working space at least equal in size to the app for the updating process. Many updating processes were terminated for lack of space.

Other problems were that the user data for Facebook and Twitter mysteriously disappeared and I would have to reenter user name and password again. Occasionally when moving into an out of signal range area and back into signal range that the device would not re-register itself to the network. Maps were probamatic not actually showing me where I was but where I was the last time I used Maps. To get a position I used an app I downloaded to show me the exact opposite side of the world and use the toggle option "There" and "Here".

After nearly 12 months I backed up the SD micro card, open up the back, removed the sim card and the SD micro card and placed the sim card into my old Nokia 3315 which I am now using once more. I can be sure of receiving SMS text messages.

The Samsung Galaxy Y Duo is a budget smart phone and would be useful for someone who will not be into downloading too many apps. Anyone inclined to download too many apps would be well advised to consider a phone with a far larger system memory. A good large capacity SD micro card is no substitute for a miserly system memory. For a light user of smart phone apps the Samsung Galaxy Y Duo is ideal for a first time entry level smart phone but a serious user of smart phone functions should invest in a device which costs 2 or 3 times as much.

Meanwhile I will be using my old faithful Nokia 3315. If I buy another smart phone it will not be a budget smart phone.
