Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 renders show a thinner device
Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy Z Fold7 in July or thereabouts, and today we have the first ever set of leaked renders purportedly depicting the upcoming foldable device. These are CAD-based, so minor details could still change, but they should give us a good overall look at what Samsung is currently cooking.
And it seems like the Korean company has finally decided to pay some attention to the recent trend of foldables getting thinner and thinner. This has been started by its Chinese competitors, and Oppo's recently unveiled Find N5 currently holds the title of world's thinnest book-style foldable.
The Fold7 won't take the crown away from Oppo, but thankfully it will be pretty close - close enough for most people, we'd say. It's said to be 4.5mm thick when unfolded, and 9.5mm thick when folded. This allegedly includes the camera bump, and when ignoring the camera bump, the thickness should be "closer to 9mm", though exactly what it is isn't specified unfortunately.
For reference, the Oppo Find N5 is 4.2mm thick when unfolded and 8.9mm thick when folded. Fractions of a millimeter are not usually discernible in real life, so for all intents and purposes Samsung's next book-style foldable will feel practically the same as the Find N5 in thickness. However, the aspect ratio plays a part too, but it's unclear just what it will be.
For what it's worth, the Fold7 unfolded is claimed to measure 158.4 x 143.1 mm, which makes it slightly taller and more than 1cm wider than its predecessor, so we might be getting a wider aspect ratio for the cover screen.
While all of that is welcome news, the fact that the battery capacity will stay at 4,400 mAh is less so, in a world in which competitors can cram 5,600 mAh cells into similar bodies. The Fold7 will allegedly have an 8.2-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover screen. At the helm should be Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset.
In terms of cameras, the main one will be upgraded to a 200 MP sensor, the one from the Galaxy Z Fold SE. It will be paired with a 12 MP ultrawide and 10 MP telephoto camera, while the selfie cameras seem unchanged from the Fold6 with a 4MP under-display one in the folding screen and a 10MP one in the cover display.
