Samsung Gear S3 will likely have a "Classic" variant as well

Victor, 09 August, 2016

September is almost here and with that a whole new wave of announcements. Of course, there is the eagerly-anticipated iPhone 7 release, but even before that IFA will take place. And while the convention has been missing the brilliance of a Galaxy Note unveiling the last couple of years, many OEMs still unveil interesting tech at the show.

By all accounts, Samsung will update its Gear smartwatch family at the venue, with what should logically be the Gear S3. We have already heard a lot about the wearable and now a newly uncovered trademark seems to indicate that Samsung won't be launching just the one device.

The Korean giant has already obtained the rights to the S3 Classic name and if the S2 Classic is any indication, it should once again be a more refined version. Another recent trademark document also mentioned the "Frontier" title, but we still aren't quite sure what to make of that one.

It could very well be yet another version of the device. The Gear S2 did have quite a few lesser known variations hidden behind various carrier deals and 3G/4G monikers, so this might be an additional effort to streamline the lineup. However, since we have already heard that the Gear S3 will have a few extra sensors like a barometer and altimeter, all catering to a more active lifestyle, "Frontier" might be a slogan of sorts.

September seems like a long time when you waited for something for months.
