chris2004, 03 Apr 2009Dust under the cover.
After reading various comments and r... moreI am quite shocked and almost lost for words when I read that you are so concerned about dusts. What in the world doesn't attract/retain/collect dusts?? Even the computer you're logging on to read or type in your comments is already collecting dust every second...
But anyway, whatever phone you decide to buy, my advice to keep those dust mites to the minimal is to buy a small soft brush and do a routine cleaning at least on a weekly basis, if dusts on phone is a major concern. Alternatively you can use wet tissue to scrub off the more nasty ones, good thing about this is that it removes odours and keep your phone smelling fresh. Last option will be to send in your phone for cleaning at service centres or phone shops, but unsure if this service is widely available or its costs.
Hope this helps.

Dirk, 29 Mar 2009Great phone but VERY disappointed with battery life.
I h... moreIt's a common misconception that the Innov8 has horrible battery life.
I'll tell you, when I first got the phone and charged it fully and let it run to see how many hours I could squeeze out of it, it shut off on me in less than 24 hours. I was pretty mortified.
So I went onto this site and read the comments and suggestions. Followed the charging suggestion (leave it off, charge it for 10 hours straight - repeat process a couple of times during the next chargings).
And now, I'm on the 7th day of a single charge with minimum to moderate use.
I'm very happy with the battery life now :)

Dust under the cover.
After reading various comments and reviews, a lot of i8510 users are complaining about Dust under the cover. How serious is the problem?
I was about to buy the phone but I think this is very serious for the money.
Is the problem both 16GB and 8GB?
I am now thinking buying N96 instead.
Please can you advise on that???

My first reaction when I saw its launch advertisement and availability for sale was like, "Oh my gosh! There's a phone now that has the same capturing power as my 8MegaPixels digital compact camera!" That got me started googling up for more information on this product, and after reviewing what I learned about the i8510 [INNOV8], I told myself that this is the next phone I will be getting as soon as I can find cash for it.
Yes, it has been a costly phone since its launch date even until now. No contract price still hangs around close to S$800, and new line/upgrade prices are not any attractive at all as they are offering from S$498 to S$698. However, I care to think that it is definitely worth its value for what consumers would be getting - 1) World's first 8MP mobile phone; 2) Strong alternative to boring Nokia phones; 3) Prestigious service at Samsung service centres (regarding after-sales services, I find that Samsung does it better as they usually have less people which results in shorter waiting time, and one big highlight is that they even offer SpeedPost delivery back to your home so you don't even need to visit the service centre to collect your phone!).
The overall outlook of the phone looks fabulous. It has a neat blend of matte and gloss black textures, from the front side it looks good for office executives to carry around on business hours, while its back side spots the look of a simple but useful camera resembling stand-alone digital compact ones, allowing users to take some good photos and videos when it is time for some R&R. The battery cover pops out nicely with a gentle press and pull/push on a designated catch (with arrow indication), SIM card and battery are straight forward and easy to remove or replacing them back. When it is all clipped back in place, the battery cover sits in perfectly and neatly.
Buttons. A common deciding factor for consumers when making purchasing decisions. I would say it is very important to me as well, because I am gonna have to mesh my phone buttons everyday, hundreds of times a day when using applications and mainly sms/mms/email where I really need a good feel pressing every single button. I am greatly satisfied with INNOV8's buttons, even though the keypad looks like the numbers are close together and in one piece, I still get a good feel of the individual numbers pressed with my big asian fingers. And that includes the menu and navigation buttons as well, they are cleverly spaced so it is unlikely to mis-press buttons unless you have NBA players' hands. ;-)
As for the camera, I believe it is a hands-down winner. Unlike any typical camera phones that are available in the market, INNOV8's camera lens is specially shaped with a good flash right on top of it, has got dedicated camera buttons for photo/video/playback while using the volume key for zooming in, and the camera software offers much depth and functions... This makes the phone a noticeable player even in the stand-alone digital compact camera market.
I certainly enjoy INNOV8's 8GB internal memory, allowing mass storage of my favourite photos/videos/songs/files on the phone without the need for external memory card storage. But even if required, this phone supports up to 16GB micro-SD card. Nice and catchy marketing connection I noticed - INNOV'8' with '8'MP camera, '8'GB storage, 'INNOV8' association with 'Innovate'.
So much for its strengths, I guess it would be fair to discuss some of its flaws too. First, the USB port (for charging and data connection). The port itself is fine, but the cover is rather fragile. It can be broken off easily if you are not careful (I have broken it once by the way) as it is only a small piece of plastic looking flimsy. Same goes for the micro-SD card slot cover, though chances of ripping this part off is minimal as you can connect it to your PC as 'Mass Storage Device' via the phone's USB cable so you do not have to take out the card at all. I have experienced longer charging time required for Samsung phones too, as compared to Nokia phones. I recall when I was still using Symbian-based Nokia phones like n70/n80/6110/n81/n82 I only needed about 1.5hrs to fully charge them, compared to INNOV8's 2-3hrs to fully charge. Generally I think these are minor issues, though it will be good for Samsung to fix and improve on them.
Lastly, before I end my review, I would like to share in my perspective why I switched from using Nokia phones to using Samsung phones now:-
1) Nokia used to be 'The Everything' by offering all the useful and practical features, functions, applications on its phones, while Samsung tried their shot at silly designs and styles and selling them way over their perceived value. But now Samsung has pretty much caught up in the value creation game, putting Nokia as indifferent or insignificant in terms of features, designs, functions, applications, and after-sales services these days. Thus, Samsung is now a competitive and strong alternative to consumers seeking something fresh from the boring phone offerings from market leader Nokia.
2) Nokia is now making their phones to be 'cash suckers' for their users. Pay a one-time price to purchase a phone, and that is not the end. Pay data charges to use GPS voice-guide services, pay for annual GPS license, pay for music downloads, pay for n-gage gaming, pay to use OVI services, pay pay pay... While at Samsung, I applaud for the clever partnership with Route66 or AGIS to provide great-value maps and navigation services, in which consumers usually get a free license card in the phone package (e.g. INNOV8, OMNIA, i7110, i780) and the GPS connection is direct from satellite thus saving consumers hefty data charges.
3) Samsung phones are more differentiated and focused right now, as we can see that they limited stocks of top-selling models and shortened product life cycles of many phones (e.g. G810 was a mid-2008 phone but effectively no longer available at major telcos by end of 2008). This is good for Samsung fans as they know that they are holding on to something unique, not everyone will be using 'the same thing'.
4) I am impressed that Samsung service centre offers free home delivery of your repair completed mobile phone. This saves you the hassle of visiting the service centre to collect your phone, but also the dreadful waiting time. Besides, this also means you will expect less people and less waiting time if you were to send in your phone for servicing!
Hope you enjoy the read and probably hop onto the Samsung bandwagon too! ;)

Hey guys, quick question regarding the INNOV8..
Is there any difference other than the internal memory capacity between the 8GB and 16GB models?
My local phone outlet has no stock for 16GB model but has stock for 8GB and I wont mind getting just the 8GB because of the option to insert 16GB external memory card.
24GB will be plenty enough although I will be somewhat disappointed I didnt get the 16GB beast..
Please reply, many thanks :)
