This was my first Android based smartphone after owning many different models of BlackBerry devices and even the first and second generation iPhone (the latter being an iPhone 3G)

The G1 interested me in Android but also turned me off a bit with it's rather cheap feeling plastics and slide keyboard.

I then seen the Behold II, the dazzling new AMOLED display with amazing colors and despite being made of plastic, this phone felt like a real premium device that rivaled the same retail price of the (then new) BlackBerry Bold 9700.

Where do I start here? My personal experience with the Behold II had me amazed then annoyed. I was stunned on the quality of the 5MP camera on this phone. I even dare to claim it took better photos than my far newer Galaxy S2! My only problem was my original phone had a bad radio in it, poor if no coverage at all despite a tower being a block away. Taking it inside, nothing... outside in the middle of my back yard, one bar of edge. Not a good first impression. I've had T-Mobile service for ten years at that point and had my old work BlackBerry to compare but it was a 8320, no 3G but full EDGE indoors.

Needless to say, I got a new replacement after returning to the retail store. I paid full cash price for this phone which at the time was $550 not including tax! The replacement worked great so I could go on a rather weird adventure with this SNAFU of a phone.

I loved its design and the still images were simply amazing, the 3G call quality was decent and the screen was large enough for easy typing. I did prefer the HTC keyboard and discovered that it installed with no problem on the BH2. Then after loading some media on a 16GB memory card I had used in my old BlackBerry, the Samsung music player would not read any of the ID3 tags or cover art on a large majority of the music I loaded. The files it did recognize were mislabeled and had fuzzy artwork despite the high quality covers.

This annoyed me. I did like the fact that during the time that this was the only Android phone with any option to improve bass and other features. The brighter side of things was its display and the video player. Samsung got that right at least and I converted Avatar to see just how awesome this screen was. Video playback was simply beautiful. Much detail was lost due to the low resolution of the screen, but I could see that OLED had a great future ahead of it.

The straw that broke the camel's back so to speak was the combination of the earlier feature phone themed TouchWiz and Android 1.5 "Cupcake". The app drawer sliding out from the left of the screen often getting in the way when trying to flip through your limit of three home screens. No "snap to grid" icon arrangement to be found either. Many promised and slipped updates from T-Mobile and Samsung and no fix for the worst bug of all on that phone...

Random unmounting of the memory card even when just letting the phone sit still. I fell victim of the phone corrupting my 16GB memory card and thankfully my BlackBerry was able to repair and format it. Many photos lost, much confidence lost in what could have been a near hit for Samsung went away with a whisper.

When it came to the Cube key, I found this to be nothing more than a "hey, look at me!" gimmick. It really was useless.

I returned this phone disappointed as it was one of the best cameras I've ever used on a cell phone until the iPhone 4S for image quality. On a functionality level, thankfully Samsung brought that back with the Galaxy S2 and S3.

In closing, the Behold II was a brave first attempt by Samsung to get into the Android smartphone market and move away from Windows Mobile. It wasn't the greatest success, but in my eye it wasn't a complete failure.
