the software is (in case of your Sanyo V801SA) of Sanyo itself. It only is locked by vodafone and has some other restrictions applied to it. I happen to own a GX30 on Vodafone software and have connections in Korea, to. And let me tell you this, THEY DON'T COMPARE! A typical korean Samsung/LG just can't compare to just about any DoCoMo/KDDI/Vodafone i can think of. screen/software/features/hardware etc.. etc... My GX30 would actually be a match for an typical korean Samsung phone.
They may be in front of Japan in cameras, but knowing NTT DoCoMo that won't last very long...

By the sounds of it you are American? Am i right? How would you know anything about Vodafone...they don't even operate a Vodafone network over there.

Yep, I'm a University Student.
Funny enough, my roommate is Japanese with a JAPANESE VODAFONE mobile (Sanyo V801SA). The Software on it IS Vodafone and the locks and restrictions are...VODAFONE. I've tested it, I've seen the QVGA 262k etc. etc.
I've got Korean friends....silly enough most of them brought their CYON and Anycall phones...They didn't know that they wouldn't work here.
So what do I do? I play with them. To me there isn't really too much difference between all the NEC's, CYON or Samsung. They are phones with above average specs compared to any GSM. It's just amazing how Korea and Japan are racing in the market.
For your interests: I'm from Germany, so I know probably many more carriers, even different Vodafone branches (Vodafone-D2, Vodafone Pacific, etc. etc.)
I've lived in the states and have used Sprint and ATT. Now some put their own software on it and some don't. In Germany, Vodafone and T-Mobile are the only ones. But that's because they also get some exclusive handsets (GX20/30 etc.). All the UMTS devices are Vodafone branded (including Software).
I own a GX20 with Vodafone software, on the Vodafone Network. So don't tell me I know nothing about them.
I'm not an engineer, but I can tell you quite a bit about them.
Oh...and about the Optical Zoom. The new Samsung does have Optical...read the reviews.
Let's not go there with screen resolution and size. CGS vs. TFT have been discussed throroughly in here. And I know that if a 2.2 inch TFT with 176 x 220 px, and a CGS (for example) 2.2 inch with 320 x 240 px must have different spacing and size of pixels.
Vodafone is still a rip off, and you wanna know why they brand their phones? I don't need to tell you, do i?

skater42 you just don't know anything about vodafone or how cellular phone's are made and how it works with each different carrier. Sharp, Sanyo, etc. manufacture specific phone/model for different carrier with different specifications! looks like you're a college student in Australia? Study up dude! don't act stupid, study the technical details of the phone like screen size versus resolution, etc. You are a pain in this forum

you obviously never held a vodafone Japan NEC or Sharp... there software isn't Vodafone, but their own. I also bet that you haven't seen a Sharp QVGA 262K screen in real life before... then you would know why they have such a good reputation
And i can't detect any form of optical zoom in the samsung...

Since Samsung has just released it's 5 MPx phone, they have outdone the Japanese at this stage. LG and Anycall make good phones, I've held them...and you can't fit a 320x240 px screen into a phone that is only 8cm tall and 4cm wide. Not sure how big the new LG is though.
When it comes to Software....All Vodafone Models have Vodafone...so its a piece of crap software.

Actually Japan's AU KDDI's Casio A5406CA already has a 3.2MP sensor. And where did you get the idea that Samsung and LG are more advanced than NEC or Sharp? They may have better camera quality (for now at least), but if you look more closely at their phones NEC and Sharp are still WAY ahead of them. For instance the LG 3.24MP phone only has a 176x220 pixels display but even the european Sharp GX30 or NEC n410i have 240x320 pixel displays. Japanese phones are also much better when it comes to software. Did i mention Bluetooth?

you are comparing Apples and Oranges here. First of all, it's not theoretically possible, its Reality. The new 5MPx Samsung, released next week, features True Color, Camera, Mp3 player and much more. But this is all computer technology...nothing new. Just more compact. And would you rather carry around a Laptop that weighs 2 KG? Think of it this way, if you need to carry three devices, where will you store them? How many pockets can you have? And a MP3 player, Phone and PDA together will weigh just as much as one SINGLE hi-tech mobile phone.
The price...yes. It is high. But wait for 4-6 Months and it will have reduced 1/3 of the original. If you buy from ebay it's cheaper anyways (I don't know anyone who's bought a $900 phone from a phoneshop). But then again, would you come cheaper buying an MP3 player, Camera and Phone?
By the way, how is one being lazy? Are you still referring to mobile phones as initially argued? This has nothing to do with being lazy, but rather smart. Lazy is when I drive my car to the mailbox, which is 50 m away from the garage.
Lot's of people who have an attitude like you are either jealous (cuz THEY don't have it), or just don't use the features that new mobiles incorporate. Like the older generation (to be very general). My father has the same opinion like you. This is not personally aimed at you, please don't be offended.
Just try a PDA-Phone from your friends and see how handy it can be ;)

Another point to bear in mind is that although it is theoretically possible to have multi-function devices, there is a price to pay. The cost of such a device would be VERY high, and the size and weight will be hefty as well. It's a great idea for the lazy, but in all fairness it's impractical. I mean do you have a device at home which can allow you to watch TV, act as a washing machine and also be a gas cooker? Absurd!

Uhm...I wasn't arguing against the point of having 3-in-1 but for it...
I do believe however that a Mobile Phone camera compared to a QUALITY digital camera cannot be as good. This will hopefully change in the future though.
And remember...the megapixels are only the SIZE of a picture, not the quality. My old 2MPx Digicam had a good sized picture...but the quality sucked. Too dark, too blury. My Sharp 0.3 Mpx Camera kicks butt compared to it. But then I have to say, my Digital Camera was a cheap brand.
Do you understand where I'm getting at?

Where do you get the idea that Japan is more advanced? I haven't seen a 3.24 MPx camera in the Japanese market yet, NTT DOCOMO and Vodafone so far have made it to 2-2.5 MPx.
Anycall and LG have both released 3.24 MPx cameras already, but Japan?
Now Samsung (Anycall) and LG (CYON), in my opinion, are technology wise way ahead of Vodafones NEC and SHARP models. This is for the CDMA market, of course!!!

Vodafone's 3g network has a global standard. The Sharp 902 will be available on all European Vodafone networks and the 902sh will be available on Vodafone in Japan. I'm guessing the 902 will also become available on Vodafone Australia and any other Vodafone network.

i don hav the proof bt its really likely that ther is cuz 5mega pixel camera phone is comin out in korea soon. assuming that japan is more advanced, it is likely that ther is 4mega pixel in japan already
