This is literally the ONLY modern phone with this form factor and design out there.
Coming from XZ2C I would totally buy it if it would be available outside of Japan.
Sadly, it comes with downsides having a fairly high priority for me, which is why I'm not importing it:
1. No root / twrp / custom roms available (at least I'm unable to find them)
2. Bootloader unlock possible, but undiscovered effects. On XZ2C it leads to deletion of DRM Keys, disabling several hardware camera features. This is also not reversible in any way.
3. Limited aftermarket, will be hard to find common spare parts (like battery, digitizer) for self repair.

AnonD-887937, 05 Sep 2019Hey guys, here are my first impressions: Bought from eba... more"Sim-free" means you can use your phone with whatever carriers in Japan, and your phone is not locked by carrier. That's all. It is a little different to "global version". A sim-free phone can be used in any countries, but not in others.

No band 20 LTE kills this stone cold dead outside Japan. Shame.

It is a beautiful small and light phone, was struggling between it and Sony Xperia xz2 compact. Here are my thoughts after one year using it.
Pros
1. Very sleek and ergonomic design
2. Battery is not that bad, in standby mode it can last up to 5-6 days. If you use it actively, it will not last a day.
Cons
1. Waterproof disappeared in 6 months, nearest guarantee office is in Japan, so just let it go.
2. Camera is...it is not a camera it is a disaster....
It can't work even with google translator properly, as it fails to capture the text.
Zoom makes it pixel-like, so no zoom at all.
Brightness levels are always wrong - have to adjust it manually every time.
Never put attention to camera when buying a phone, as I thought all modern phones should have it at a descent level by default. I was wrong, so wrong :)
Bottomline: buy Sony instead and don't waste time and money on Sharp.

I would love to have this phone if only it had larger battery. The fact, the battery is smaller than my z3 compact just kills the whole phone for me.
Sharp keep the size, get rid of the notches, they are not necessary anymore, bump up the battery and I am all yours. also who needs front facing camera :(.

Can they release internationally at a good price?
Not enough ultra compact phones of high end at good prices. An iPhone like 10cm phone with 855s, or 865x and 8k 64mp, as card latest storage and USB 3.1-2, 3.5mm with microphone channels, would be an insane camera phone. They could do thin good looking (no large notches) mid range version, and 1 cm thick ultra version with large battery, or 4-5mm with attachable battery of any thickness and storage card. $200-$400.
That would remake the Sharp brand internationally, they could even do a 3D game phone version which could be the ultra. Think of it as a little LG like camera phone, or Asus ROG II, for those who don't need a big phone cluttering up their pockets or small hands.
Sharp is one of the few companies set up for it who don't concentrate on large phones.

suggestd improvements:
90Hz instead of 120
size is already good
3500mAh battery
UFS 3.0
get rid of the bottom notch
I admire Sharp for thinking outside of the box, but this phone is not balanced

I purchased one of these and use it on T-Mobile in the US. In urban and suburban areas I am able to get 4G LTE, but elsewhere connectivity is almost impossible, and regular phone call quality suffers.
Other than connectivity, though, it's amazing. This is probably the most up-to-date "small" form factor phone you can get. The display is stunning and the camera takes great HDR photos.

/v/anon, 21 Sep 2019shall we petition Sharp to release this internationally? We can try.. but as far as I read Samsung did not allow Sharp to sell internationally because they want to build Samsung brand name in Europe and America. Samsung has a controlling number of shares of Sharp.

First of all, I don't own this phone. I own a Sony Xperia X Compact. Sony is my go to brand for when it comes to phones because they create the best compact phones. Then I stumbled across this Sharp and I am super impressed. These days all the phones are so big they can hardly fit in your pocket. I NEED THIS PHONE
