Snapdragon 660 benchmarked: a small bump over the S653

Qualcomm’s mid-range series have a growing fan base thanks to solid performance and great battery life. Both qualities should improve with the new generation - the Snapdragon 660 is built on a 14nm process for efficiency and uses eight Kryo 260 cores for power.

So it’s a combination of the 625 and 653 chipsets that came before it, the best of both worlds. Qualcomm promises a 20% improvement over the Snapdragon 653.

An early Geekbench 4.1 score shows what we can expect - an unknown device (code name “Heart”) was tested and it has a 16% lead on the Oppo F3 Plus (S653) in the multi-core test. Pretty good! This is coupled with a 10% bump in single-core performance.

The Snapdragon 653 was already a pretty power efficient chipset, however its aging 28nm process held it back. The Snapdragon 660 offers a decent improvement in speed, but the real upgrade should be power efficiency. Can it beat or at least match the 625?

We’ll have to wait for Snapdragon 660 devices to hit the market. And we’re yet to see the Snapdragon 630 perform, but it uses low-power Cortex-A53 cores so we don’t expect any major improvements in performance. This means the 660 might be the mid-range chipset to have.
